Bermuda enjoy whitewash double at Carib champs

Bermuda's male and female squash teams both whitewashed their opponents yesterday in the Caribbean Junior Squash Championships.

The girls demolished the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States 5-0 for their second successive victory and in the process clinched a place in the semi-finals of the team competition in Barbados.

The boys, despite the absence of injured top player James Stout, walloped the Cayman Islands 5-0 to bounce back after Wednesday's 4-1 defeat by Guyana.

The girls were scheduled to meet Barbados last night in the final match in their round-robin pool. But play was postponed until this morning to give players and officials the chance to get back to their hotels before an incoming tropical storm hit the Caribbean island.

The OECS defaulted two of their matches against Bermuda's girls, under-19s Katy Lennox and Morgan Lightbourne the beneficiaries.

And the OECS managed to win only seven points in the other three matches.

In the under-15s, Caty Luckhurst defeated Amber Gleeson 9-1, 9-2, 9-1, while in the under-17s Jessica Mitchell beat Natasha George 9-2, 9-0, 9-0.

Laura Robinson followed up her three-game, under-13s win against the Caymans on Wednesday with another one, as she destroyed Melissa Rivers 9-1, 9-0, 9-0.

The Bermuda girls are now second in their pool and the worst they can place overall in the team competition is fourth.

Ross Triffitt, director of squash at Bermuda Squash Racquets Association, was impressed with their efforts.

"They have not come up against one of the stronger teams yet, but we have three girls debuting for Bermuda and they're doing extremely well," said Triffitt.

Triffitt added the storm was due to hit Barbados at 6.00 p.m. last night, with winds forecast to reach 50 miles per hour.

The boys found the going nearly as easy against the Caymans as the girls did against OECS.

In the under-19s, Stephen Smith won without conceding a single point, triumphing 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 against Jonathan Adams, while Justin Robinson won by default.

In the under-17 match-up, Andrew Robinson saw off Tom Sargison 9-6, 9-0, 9-1 and in the under-13s Robert Maycock cruised to 9-1, 9-0, 9-1 victory over Alain Mundeen.

Andrew Stout completed the Bermuda whitewash by beating Patrick McConvey 9-2, 9-1, 9-2 in the under-15s.

The team competition will finish with the final play-offs for placings tomorrow.
