Bermuda finish fourth after final day wash-out

Bermuda's national cricket team left Argentina on Saturday without the satisfaction of winning their second match of the Americas Cup.

Rain _ as it did for the first three days - had the last laugh, ruining the fifth and final round of matches in the tournament that ultimately had to be reduced to four rounds.

Bermuda had been scheduled to play the host nation while the United States were to oppose Cayman Islands and Canada were to finish against the Bahamas.

The frustrating result meant that Bermuda finished fourth overall with just one victory in their four games. The team earned two points and had a net run rate of -0.29.

The United States - the only unbeaten team in the competition - were crowned Americas Cup champions. They finished on eight points from four victories with the Caymans taking the runners-up spot by virtue of a better net run rate than Canada.

Both teams won three of their four matches and earned six points each. However, the Caymans boasted a net run rate of 1.48 while the Canadians' rate was 0.42.

The Bahamas and Argentina took the cellar positions, fifth and sixth respectively. The Bahamas won one of four games (two points) but their run rate of -1.88 placed them below Bermuda. Tournament hosts Argentina would have been very disappointed not to have won any matches or scored any points at home. Their net run rate was -0.77.

During the one-week, rain-plagued tournament, in which the two top teams were originally to have played a final, Bermuda lost to the Caymans, Canada and the United States while savouring their lone success against the Bahamas.

The team were scheduled to return home via New York last night.
