Bermuda in mix for 20/20 World Cup
Bermuda?s cricketers will have a chance to reach a second World Cup in January when they take on other ICC Associate nations for a right to go to the Twenty/20 version of the global challenge.
The ICC decided yesterday that all ten full members would take part in next year?s Twenty20 World Championships in South Africa, to be joined by two teams from next January?s ICC World Cricket League Division One in Kenya that involves Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, the hosts, Holland and Scotland.
?This decision gives an added context to the World Cricket League and provides our leading Associate sides with a massive incentive in Kenya,? said new ICC president Percy Sonn.
?The two teams that qualify will have an opportunity to showcase themselves on both a national and global level, something that should provide a massive boost for their own development programmes.?
The format, venues and dates for the ICC Twenty20 World Championship will be announced later in the year.
And Bermuda coach Gus Logie is pleased to see his players get another chance at some international glory.
?I said to the players after our success in Ireland last year that this was just going to be the beginning of an unbelievable journey,? said Logie.
?A lot of new opportunities have opened themselves up to us and it is up to the players now to make the most of them. I have warned them repeatedly that there will have to be sacrifices made in order to take advantage of our new status and this is just another example.
?There are going to be sacrifices in terms of friends, family and work ? and there are going to have to be sacrifices by Government and by companies ? but there are going to be fantastic opportunities for the players and it is in their hands if they are going to make the most of them.
?Our stated goal is to be the best in the Americas and then the best out of the Associates ? it is something for us all to shoot for.?
