Bermuda on course for Rosebowl title

Bermuda number one Nick Kyme survived a challenge from Ronald Prescott of Jamaica.

Bermuda continued their quest for a first Rosebowl championship in four years by sweeping the in-form Jamaicans off the court during Mens 'A' action last night at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.

The local side wasted little time in dismantling their Caribbean counterparts, delighting the home crowd in the packed gallery with a dominating display.

Tommy Sherratt set things in motion after he bolted out of the gate to a 5-0 lead against Noel Williams in the first game of the opening match, before closing out his opponent in straight games for a 3-0 win.

"I just wanted to go on and be steady and give the team a good start," said Sherratt afterwards. "It was pretty straight forward. I knew that I could just run him if I had to, so I used my fitness. But he wasn't moving to the front of the court so I decided to pick my shots and I didn't have too much trouble."

In the evening's second match, national champion Nick Kyme came through a tricky encounter with Ronald Prescott before emerging victorious 3-1 to give Bermuda a comfortable 2-0 lead.

"It was a lot of fun," said Kyme. "Both of us have contrasting styles. He likes to retrieve the ball, but I prefer to end the rallies quickly and go for my shots more.

"He gave me a scare in the second game. I was really worried at one point, I didn't know what to do. But in between games I got a lot of coaching and sort of came back on with a new kind of mindset."

Like a boxer eager to enter the ring, Gary Plumstead came prepared to do battle with Jamaica's top player James Bullock.

In no time at all he took hold of the proceedings in devastating fashion, sealing the game 3-0 to edge Bermuda a bit closer to the overall title.

"I played against him two years ago and so I knew how he played,"said Plumstead. "I knew that I had to take the game to him because if I didn't I would have been in for a longer night as he is ten years my junior."

With the win safely tucked under their wings, Bermuda's Chase Toogood proved just that against Jamaica's Steve Smith to win 3-1, while compatriot Ryan Bell breezed by Granville Smith 3-0.

The womens' and veterans' teams had 5-0 walkovers.

In the day's earlier fixtures, Cayman Islands defeated Bahamas 5-0 in both the Mens 'A' and 'B' divisions, 3-1 in Ladies action and 5-0 in veteran's play.

Bermuda now face the tournament's defending champions Cayman Islands in today's final round of matches at the Devonshire courts.
