Bermuda suffer sixth straight loss
Bermuda 178
Canada179-7
Bermuda's African tour troubles continued with a sixth successive one-day defeat at Willowmoore Park in Benoni today, a miserable batting performance handing Canada victory by three wickets.
A disappointed and clearly frustrated coach, Gus Logie, warned afterwards he might have to look at new and younger players when the squad return home next week.
Having won the the toss and dismissed Bermuda for 179, Canada eased home with more than 10 overs to spare.
And although they lost seven wickets along the way, there was always only one winner in this fourth match of the Tri-Series tournament.
Canada and Holland meet today in a match that will go a long way to decide who tops the standings while Bermuda, already condemned to last place, have just one game remaining, against the Dutch on Saturday, to salvage some pride.
Opener Abdool Samad top scored for Canada with just 39 but 28 from Desmond Chumney and 20 from Sunil Dhaniram ensured there was never any panic after Bermuda's total had left their opponents needing to score at a leisurely run rate of 3.6 per over.
Erratic pacer Kevin Hurdle grabbed three for 52 but those figures were tempered by nine no balls and two wides which helped swell the extras column to an unacceptable 30.
Dwayne Leverock was by far Bermuda's best bowler, picking up two for 21 in 10 tidy overs.
However, once again it was the pitiful batting display that let Bermuda down.
Canada paceman Henry Osinde ripped the heart out of the early order with three wickets in his first two overs, one of which was a maiden, and from 18 for three in the third over Logie's men never recovered.
Dean Minors was caught in the slips off his first ball, Clay Smith went in identical fashion, having got off the mark with a towering six, and David Hemp was clean bowled for a duck on his third ball.
Saleem Mukuddem, so often Bermuda's saviour on this tour, compiled a patient 57, Irving Romaine made a useful 27 and Lionel Cann a typical quickfire 21, but after Osinde left the attack Bermuda were tied down by Canada's spinners.
Captain George Codrington picked up four for 33 while Kevin Sandher conceded just 26 runs off his 10 overs as did pace bowler Umar Bhatti, both claiming one wicket.
Full report and Logie's reaction in tomorrow's Gazette.
