Bermuda's young guns beaten
Bermuda's youngsters went down 4-0 at the hands of a fitter and better prepared Trinidad side last night - but by no means disgraced themselves.
Kyle Lightbourne's men - with just five days notice - flew down to take on Leo Beenhakker's men who are in the midst of a World Cup qualifying campaign.
The home side, who entertain Panama next week on their journey to Germany 2006, played a number of UK professionals in their side and proved too strong for Bermuda, particularly in the latter stages at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
The Island team, lacking senior players such as Shaun Goater, Khano Smith and John Barry Nusum, battled hard in the first half, going in at the break just a single goal behind after Kentoine Jennings - who cut short a holiday in Baltimore to play - deflected a shot past his own ‘keeper, Nigel Burgess of Hamilton Parish.
But after the break, the home side's superior fitness and preparation - their large squad have been training in a live-in camp this week - proved too much for what was effectively an Under 23 side and Bermuda could do little to prevent a flurry of goals.
Goals from UK pros Kenwyne Jones (Southampton), Dennis Lawrence (Wrexham) and Stern John (Coventry) rounded off the scoring for the home side in front of around 400 fans.
Bermuda will take on the hosts again tomorrow at the same venue in a lower-key affair, with both sides expected to use those players who didn't start last night's game.
