Big clubs meet after FA Cup draw hitch
Had it not been for a technical error, several of the Island?s Premier Division clubs might have left Bermuda Football Association?s (BFA) FA Cup draw in higher spirits yesterday.
But after North Village?s ping-pong ball was mistakenly excluded from the initial draw, several club representatives and were invited to dip their hands in a replica of the coveted trophy and draw all over again.
Now, instead of taking on First Division club Prospect, PHC Zebras will clash against current cup holders Dandy Town while North Village and Boulevard will square off against each other in the second round on December 19.
?We are not really too concerned with the league being as competitive as it is,? said Zebras coach Mark Wade, after learning of his team?s next FA Cup opponents yesterday.
?We know we can compete and possibly defeat any team in the league given we show up in the right frame of mind and execute the game plan on the day.?
In the only meeting between the two clubs this season, Hornets ran out 2-1 victors in a Premier Division clash at Southampton Oval on October 3.
?I think we made a fairly good showing and that first game will undoubtedly provide us with some motivation for the FA Cup game as we have another crack at them. But in order to be champions you must first beat the champions,? added Wade.
Following the initial FA Cup draw, Town had been paired with struggling Somerset Trojans.
?In order to win any major trophy we need to win all of our cup matches and so it doesn?t really matter who we play now,? said Town president Cal Blankendal.
?If you want to win the cup then you have to beat whoever you get picked against, and that?s basically it.
?In the first game I think PHC played a good match and I would even say that we scraped through to win. Now hopefully we can beat them again this time around.?
Four-time FA Cup champions, Boulevard, were originally drawn against Commercial Division outfit Lobster Pot. But following the second draw, Blazers were drawn against seven-times FA Cup winners North Village in the second round of the prestigious competition.
Premier Division clubs Southampton Rangers take on Commercial outfit MR Onions while nine-time FA Cup champions Trojans lock horns with First Division Paget in what will be a repeat of last season?s Shield Final.
Other FA Cup second round match ups see First Division Prospect take on Valley FC, Hamilton Parish clashing against Commercial Division Key West Rangers and Lobster Pot taking on last season?s FA Cup runner?s up, Devonshire Cougars.
Robin Hood, the only Commercial Division club ever to appear in the semi-finals of the competition, take on Ireland Rangers in the remaining cup tie.
The association, meanwhile, also staged the semi-final draws for the First Division Shield and Friendship Trophy competitions yesterday at the Captain?s Lounge on Reid Street.
Prospect will meet Ireland Rangers in the first shield semi-final while Devonshire Colts lock horns with St.David?s in the other contest.
The two Shield semi-finals will precede Friendship Trophy fixtures involving the eventual winner between Dandy Town and North Village against PHC on January 11 and Devonshire Cougars against the eventual victors between Somerset Trojans and Boulevard on February 2.
