Big-serving Douglas dumps Maybury
Romar Douglas, the gentle giant with a 98mph serve, pulled off the first major upset of the BLTA Open yesterday when he stunned veteran Sammy Maybury 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in a match that took three days to complete.
The pair started their marathon on Tuesday night and played the first two sets with Douglas taking the first after only one break.
But Maybury roared back to win the second 6-4 and that?s when the rains came.
There was no play on Wednesday night because of the weather and the two-day lay-off appeared to affect Maybury more than it did Douglas.
In the third and final set, Maybury broke Douglas at 30 when the youngster?s serve let him down time and again. In fact, Douglas got only three first serves in during the entire first three games. But when he did they were blasters and while Maybury was able to return, many of his shots left his opponent with an easy chance to put them away with an awesome overhead smash.
Maybury raced into a 3-1 lead as Douglas hit wayward shots that sailed high, wide and into the net. But suddenly the court appeared to lengthen, at least for Douglas, as he started his comeback.
He held serve at love in the fifth game, then broke Maybury at 15 to level at 3-3 and from there it was all downhill for the veteran campaigner. The power of Douglas proved too much for Maybury as he wilted under the relentless pressure until the ninth game.
Douglas saved five game points before winning with consecutive aces and a passing shot that caused Maybury to applaud as he rushed the net to congratulate his conqueror.
In other delayed matches, the top seeded seniors pair of Lavern Stowe and DeDe Cooper defeated Jane McKnight and Jane Minton 6-3, 6-1, after McKnight and Minton had lost an earlier match to Eirian Jones and Kim Burns 7-5, 6-4.
Women?s top seed Ashley Brooks defeated Elizabeth Hartley 6-3, 6-1.
