Bikers to get back on track

Lack of communication between the Sports Ministry and Bermuda Land Development Corporation (BLDC) has been blamed for the weekend?s postponement of motorcycle racing at Morgan?s Point.

Bike enthusiasts turned up at the Southampton venue on Sunday for what was supposed to be a full day of competition, only to be denied access to the premises by BLDC staff.

Yesterday, Sports Minister Dale Butler held discussions with BLDC top brass and in a press statement released afterwards assured the Island?s bike racers that the matter had been resolved and racing would resume at the alternative race track this weekend.

Butler, who in his statement also apologised to members of Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club, could not be reached for further comment at press time.

But Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club president David Jones said he was pleased the issue had been ?swiftly? put to rest.

?I?m quite happy matters have been resolved and looking forward to getting back on track with our schedule,? he said.

Racing will resume this Sunday at Morgan?s Point.

?I?m pleased the matter was resolved swiftly in a sense, but still upset that the two parties didn?t communicate beforehand,? Jones added.

BMRC members had been granted permission to use the old US Naval Annex as an alternative race track last November while Government still awaits the green light from US experts to begin new development work at Clearwater.

Safety concerns have been raised over the track?s close proximity to the runway at Bermuda International Airport and how it could possibly pose a potential aviation hazard, further prolonging what already has been a painstaking wait for BMRC members for a new facility at the East End.
