Bitter-sweet victory for diving ace Katura

Olympic diver Katura Horton-Perinchief?s winning streak continued on Wednesday despite her school?s loss to the University of Richmond.

Diving for George Washington University, the freshman took top honours in the one-metre and three-metre springboard competitions comfortably with scores of 235.13 and 260.93 points respectively.

However, her performance was not enough to prevent her college from going down in the women-only, swimming-diving clash as Richmond prevailed 173-119.

It?s been a familiar scenario for Horton-Perinchief whose individual success has contrasted miserably with team fortunes as George Washington have not fared well in many meets.

?It?s rough and quite frustrating because (University of) Texas won everything,? said the unbeaten 21-year-old, referring to her previous days as a Longhorn.

In addition to the disappointment of losing, Horton-Perinchief ? who was not pleased with how she dived ? has been sidelined with injury and will miss tomorrow?s face-off against the Army at West Point, New York.

?I have shin splints. They are terrible and they have flared up badly because of overuse but I?m dealing with them,? she said.

?I?m going to sit out for a few days, see how it feels, then get back into training because I have to work on my new dives.?

While not happy to be out of action, she noted ?this weekend isn?t nearly as important as the A-10 Championships in two weeks and then the NCAA zone qualifiers.

?So yes I?m always disappointed when I can?t dive but sometimes we must make decisions that will be best in the long run.?

Horton-Perinchief is likely to resume training on Monday after seeing a doctor and having x-rays for her injury.
