Blazers see off Hood despite firing blanks
Robin Hood 0
Boulevard 2
Commercial underdogs Robin Hood took only five-minutes to self destruct at BAA Field yesterday as Premier rivals Boulevard scrapped their way into the next round of the FA Cup.
Hood fell behind in spectacular fashion to a Coombes Simons own goal that left the 'keeper stranded as the ball flew into the net and, despite running with Blazers most of the way, failed to get back on even terms.
Second-half sub Aaron Williams, pictured, netted Boulevard's insurance goal two- minutes from the end of regulation - his team's only shot on target for the match - shortly after Hood captain Dave Wolfe received his marching orders. Wolfe was shown red for showing dissent towards the referee.
In terms of entertainment value this match bombed out with Blazers looking anything but top flight contenders and Hood more like a team clutching to a fast fading reputation in the prestigious competition.
To date Hood are the only Commercial outfit to have appeared in an FA Cup semi-final. But on yesterday's performance the club's FA Cup legacy took a severe beating as they played second fiddle against a physically superior Blazers short on ideas in front of goal.
If fans were unsatisfied with the overall standard of play, Simons' first-half blunder might have provided therapy in the form of laughter as he inexplicably lashed the ball in his own net with Blazers intent to concede possession.
To their credit though, what Hood lacked in skill they more than compensated in heart. But they were also hesistant to pull the trigger in front of goal and ultimately they paid the price as Blazers coach John Rebello, who probably found relief in a strong drink afterwards such was the torture on the pitch - gambled correctly to throw sub Williams into the mix.
From the outset Williams proved to be a thorn in Hood's side with his purposeful running into open space which gradually and methodically stretched his opponents thin at the back to create openings for his team-mates who continued to fire blanks when it looked easier to score.
Any hopes of a Hood late revival were completely shattered in the final four -minutes of the match as skipper Wolfe was sent for an early shower and then Williams popped up in the box to head home a high cross played over the top to add a pinch of respectability to the final scoreline.
Ireland Rangers 7
X Roads 3
An Akil Trott hat trick went in vain at Malabar yesterday as Ireland Rangers banged in five unanswered goals during a magical 15 minute spell to pick up a first win of the season and progress in the FA Cup.
Underdogs X Roads jumped out to 3-1 cushion on the back of Trott's goal scoring exploits in the second-half. But Rangers came storming back - the prolific Jonathan Bean leading the march with a hat trick of his own while Sean Brangman added a brace and Henry Santucci and John Martin chipped in with one apiece to completely dash all X Road hopes of an upset in the West.
"Obviously we are not happy with the result - we let them off the hook," stated a dejected X Roads team official Saleem Talbot.
"But it happened and so we must now move on from here."
Southampton Rangers 2
St. David's 0
At Southampton Oval Rangers coasted to victory also with two first-half goals.
The match-up between Second Division teams saw the home team hold an edge throughout much of the game.
Rohaan Simons , pictured, gave Rangers a 1-0 lead after 31 minutes, tapping home a rebound and then Anthony Rocker netted ten minutes later after a poor clearance following a corner kick.
St. David's fought hard but were always thwarted by some fine defensive work by centre-back Donnie Charles. But most of the attack occurred at the opposite end where Rangers' attack was able to advance more frequently. George O'Brien in the visitor's goal prevented Rangers from making the score more one-sided with a few good saves in the second half.
Tuff Dogs 0
St. George's Colts 2
Two goals in the first half from Jade Foggo gave First Division side St. George's an expected comfortable victory over Commercial Divisioners Tuff Dogs at BAA field.
Semi-finalist of the competition last season, the eastenders never looked like being beaten in this contest and really could have walked away with a more emphatic victory had Tuff Dogs' goalkeeper Dion Ball not been sharp.
Colts took a 1-0 lead through the hard-working Foggo after 13 minutes when he ran through the middle and placed his shot wide of the advancing Ball. But it was the goalkeeper's blunder after 28 minutes that led to the second goal, Ball misskicking and leaving Foggo with the simple task of rounding the fallen 'keeper and scoring.
The Commercial Divisioners had few scoring chances, rarely causing the Colts' defence - marshaled by veteran Neil Paynter - much concern.
With Kuma Smith prominent in midfield Colts controlled play and were always pinning their opponents down with advances.
Valley 2
BAA 6
BAA took advantage of being eligible to pick from three teams and went on to cruise to a comfortable four-goal victory over Commercial Division side Valley at Malabar.
It turned out to be a good mix for BAA when they combined their First Division squad with players from their Commercial and Under-18 teams to compete in the prestigious Cup competition - and it all turned good for them.
But it wasn't always easy for BAA. After taking a comprehensive 3-0 lead, they saw their opponents fight back and make it 3-2 at one stage. But BAA where then able to put their foot on the throttle and pulled away midway through the second half.
Chris Lema and Martin Jones scored for BAA in the opening half and then further goals came from Philip Parsons, Raykii Emory, Parsons again and Gary Adams.
Valley had the misfortune of having a player sent off by referee George O'Brien in the second half.
Prospect/Fire 0
Prospect 3
At Police field Commercial side Prospect/Fire were unable to cope with their heavily favoured First Divisiion opponents.
Led by veterans Clifford Roberts and Jerome Laws, Prospect coasted to victory with both players finding the goal and a third tally coming from youngster Kieron Bennett.
