Blazers to give young guns a shot
Premier?s Dudley Eve Cup action switches to Somerset Cricket Club tonight.
In the first match of a double-header, defending First Division Dudley Eve champions Wolves lay their title on the line against league leaders Ireland Rangers.
Rangers hammered Wolves 4-0 on October 29 at the Den in a match the West Enders dominated from the opening whistle.
?They wanted it more than us on that particular day. And although we did eventually find our rhythm we just didn?t put the ball in the net or get the breakthrough,? said Wolves veteran defender Robert Thomas.
Thomas has now urged his team-mates to ?to show up to play?.
?That?s the bottom line. We have to go at them as a team from the opening whistle,? he added.
?Last year we took everybody who beat us in the league. We beat them and won the cup because everybody wanted it.
?The skill is there, but if we are not prepared mentally then it?s just not going to happen.?
Rangers? coach Duane (Box) Derosa has warned his players not to enter tonight?s clash with over confidence following their comprehensive win against Wolves last October.
?We are definitely not going to take them for granted and our feet remain firmly planted on the ground,? Derosa said.
?But we?re ready and confident . . . not over-confident. We are prepared for them.?
The winner of tonight?s Ireland Rangers/Wolves clash will meet Devonshire Colts on Boxing Day at Lords.
Tonight?s second match, meanwhile, sees Boulevard taking Somerset Trojans for the second time in nine days at Somerset Cricket Club.
?Basically we are going to use this competition to showcase our young talent and our college kids. But always look to win every competition we enter into,? Blazers captain Shaki Crockwell said.
Boulevard came from behind to edge Trojans 2-1 in the West End on December 13 to go six points clear atop the Premier Division standings at the halfway stage of the season.
?That game was a different one altogether,? Crockwell continued.
?But we are confident, like every other team, of going all the way and winning the competition.
?And if we can continue playing the way we have been all season, then I think we will be alright.?
Trojans, gunning for a first Dudley Eve title in 12 years, went ahead through a Jelani Scott header before Blazers hit back with goals from Melchisedec Gibbons and national team defender Stanton Lewis.
Both clubs are coming off big wins in the Friendship Trophy last weekend, Boulevard ousting cup holders North Village 1-0 at the Den and Trojans prevailing over perennial arch rivals PHC Zebras on penalties at Wellington Oval.
Traditionally the Dudley Eve has not been one of Trojans? better competitions, the West Ender?s first title arriving in 1992-93 after losing in six straight finals.
Somerset are also the only team to lose in the final, against PHC in 1981-82, by the toss of a coin after three matches failed to produce a winner.
?There?s definitely not going to be any easy matches for us, and so we will have to come prepared to play,? Trojans coach Dennis Brown stated.
?Whenever we go out onto the pitch we try to win every game. And this tournament is not going to be any different.?
Tonight?s winner will take on defending champions Devonshire Cougars at Lords on Boxing Day.
Bermuda Football Association announced yesterday that the 2006 Dudley Eve Final, to be held on New Year?s Day, has now been moved from White Hill Field to Wellington Oval.
