Bermuda's Youth Cricket League has been scrapped - at least temporarily.

Bermuda Cricket Board president Reggie Pearman confirmed yesterday that not enough players had come forward to make the league worthwhile.

Pearman attributed the overall lack of numbers and Bermuda's current involvement in the ICC Under-19 World Cup qualifying tournament in Canada as the primary reasons why plans for this summer's junior programme had been shelved.

"Basically we've been concentrating on the Under-19 squad, but we will have to see what happens when they return," explained Pearman yesterday.

The Under-19s, accompanied by national coach Mark Harper, left the Island yesterday.

"Last year we had an Under-13 and an Under-15 youth league but so far this year we haven't had anything nor much co-operation from the clubs themselves," added Pearman.

However, the BCB chief didn't rule out the possibility of having the league start later this summer.

"Hopefully we can still get something going," he adde.

"If we are not able to finish off this season with youth cricket, then definitely next year we will be looking to get things back on track.

"Right now we are holding the clinics and from what I've been told things have been going along fairly well.

"But maybe after the clinics finish we can have a another look at the possibility of starting the league later this summer."
