Sean Bouchard led Bermuda's junior sailing charge on the first day of the South American Optimist Championships off Montevideo in Uruguay on Monday.

In a huge fleet of more than 160 sailors, Bouchard placed third in the first race on the Blue course and followed up with a 20th in the second to finish the opening day in 21st place overall.

Competitors are sailing on six different courses with the fleet divided into various divisions from which overall positions are calculated.

Jesse Kirkland also performed well on the Blue course with two top 20 finishes - 10th and 19th - to place 35th overall.

Elijah Simmons was in 41st position after finishes of 25th and seventh on the Yellow course while Eleanor Gardner was in sixth place among the girls and 46th overall with a 16th and 17th on the Green course.

Racing continues throughout this week.
