Boulevard primed to Blaze to glory
Could this be the year Boulevard finally rediscover the magical touch that made them a force in the 1990s?
Blazers team official Amon Brown seems to think so.
The former Boulevard defender reckons his team are long overdue for reward, having been knocking on the door of success over the past two seasons.
But that, Brown added, will all depend on just how hungry Blazers are for league and cup glory this campaign.
?I thought we were capable of success last season. But with the new additions to the team I?m confident we can achieve success this season ? it?s just all up to the players themselves,? said Brown, who formed part of the Blazers side that captured multiple cup titles in the ?90s.
?All we need to do is remain as a unit and play football to our full potential. If we can perfect certain drills in training and then bring them out on the pitch on match day, then there?s absolutely no reason why we shouldn?t be successful.?
Since rejoining the Premier Division ranks in 2001-02, Boulevard have finished third in the league two years in succession and appeared in the 2002-03 Friendship Trophy semi-final.
And so far this campaign they have been reasonably consistent, having picked up three wins in league play to remain in a two-way tie for second place with Devonshire Cougars.
Blazers are also fresh off a 7-0 demolition of Somerset Eagles in last weekend?s FA Cup first round.
Now Brown hopes his team can maintain this rich vein of form throughout the season.
?I think we have a really good chance and nobody can count us out at this stage of the game,? continued Brown.
?We have already proven ourselves over the past two seasons. Every year everybody talks about Cougars or Dandy Town and Village. But we have finished among the top three teams in the league for the past two years ? and that is a good achievement.?
Brown said with much of the focus being centred on the likes of Town, Village and Cougars, Boulevard had quietly managed to get the job done, minus all the hype other clubs have enjoyed in the media.
And he believes this in turn could increase his club?s chances for success, given much of the ?pressure? and ?hype? is on the club?s cross-town rivals.
?All of the pressure is on those teams to do well . . . and not us,? he noted. ?There?s no real pressure on us . . . all the talk is about those other bigger clubs and I think this could possibly work in our favour because we are not really expected to win.?
During the off-season, Blazers had their ranks bolstered by the arrival of super sub Marvin Belboda, who has made an immediate impact at his adopted club, along with the likes of Dennis Russell and inspirational midfielder Meshach Wade ? though the latter player is presently sidelined with a knee injury.
In Gregory Johnson and former Bermuda Under-17 national player Angelo Simmons, Blazers also possess two of the local game?s most promising strikers, while siblings Jahmah, Jahmel and Jahmarley Samuels continue to impress at the heart of the club?s defence along with Stanton Lewis and Robert Wilson, recently elevated to the national team training roster.
Meanwhile, Blazers captain Melchisedec Gibbons has again provided the impetus in midfield though he hasn?t hit the target as frequently as he probably would like.
But that aside, Boulevard have so far played as a cohesive unit with every team member making significant contributions right down to ?keeper Shejuan (Shabba) Swan.
And it is this type of cohesiveness on which Brown is pinning his hopes of future success ? but only if they can become a bit more ?serious?, he said.
?Although our guys are enjoying their game at the moment, we (coaching staff) continue to stress seriousness,? Brown added. ?It?s okay to have fun, but you can also be more serious and still have fun. But overall I think everything is beginning to come together. The bulk of the team have been playing together now for the past three seasons, and I think now they are finally beginning to gel as a unit.
?So this could very well be our year . . . but it all depends on how bad our guys really want it.?
