Boyles relishes ?second? chance
After failing to wrap up the Premier Division championship on Sunday, Dandy Town coach Devar Boyles remains upbeat over his team?s chances of hoisting a second league title in three seasons.
Town suffered a first loss of the season at the hands of Southampton Rangers in a match that saw Janeiro Tucker strike twice against his former team-mates to secure a 2-1 Rangers victory and keep Town?s champagne on ice for at least a few more days.
Hornets must now win their final league fixture of the season against Somerset Eagles in order to bask in the glory of a fourth league championship. Anything short of a win would give Devonshire Cougars a first-ever championship.
Bermuda Football Association have yet to announce a date for the match.
?Hopefully it will be a happy ending,? said Boyles. ?Yes, we are a bit disappointed that we couldn?t have done it (wrapped up the league title) earlier, but we still have a chance and that?s all you could really ask for in sports ? a chance to be successful.
?This is another chance and hopefully we can embrace it.?
The coach reckons the finale against Eagles will again be tough. The Somerset team seem to have Town?s number this season, having already beaten Hornets twice.
?All team are thorns. I guess Rangers got the result today (Sunday) and Eagles in the three matches we have played them have got two results, so it sets things up nicely,? added Boyles.
?You have to ask yourself, are we still alive? These are the games that we should live for because everything is on the line. When you lace up your boots and step out onto the pitch you must find a way to get things done and today we didn?t get it done. So we must now look ahead to the next match (with Eagles) with the view of getting the job done.?
Not only did Town fail to secure the championship, they also saw their unbeaten league streak come to a grinding halt.
Still, Boyles seems to have found a silver lining to the cloud.
?No loss is encouraging but the lessons are there. So with the loss today the players will do a lot of self-analysis of their performances, and I think the combination of what they do and what the coaching staff bring up will hopefully culminate in the desired result,? he said.
?It would have been bothersome if it would have been our first loss but luckily we had lost twice in cup games. So looking at the reaction from those losses, we were definitely better prepared for the next game. It was a gut check but I like the feeling after a loss.?
Boyles, however, refused to make any predictions on the all-important clash against Eagles.
?It?s still way to premature (to start celebrating),? he said. ?It?s disrespectful to opponents and to the game to prepare like that. You should prepare (to celebrate) in the chance that something happens so that you can enjoy it. I definitely think the guys can get the job done. I just wished we could train tomorrow (yesterday), but the guys need a day off.?
