Brewster charity to benefit from Belmont birdies

A five-dollar donation for every birdie made during this week?s Gosling?s Invitational golf tournament at Belmont Hills will go to a local charity in memory of the late Frankie Brewster.

The former Hotels, BAA and Bermuda international footballer and member of Belmont Hill, left the local sports community stunned earlier this month when he died of a heart attack.

Donations raised by lifelong friends at Island Construction are to be presented to Brewster?s wife, Margaret, upon conclusion of the 72-hole tournament which got underway in blustery conditions yesterday.

In addition to being well respected both within the local darts and football communities, Brewster was an avid golfer and member at Belmont Hills where he won the 2005 Club Championship.

?When Frankie stopped playing football, golf became his next love. We?ve been on many golf trips together going back to 1980 and of course during that time outside of Frankie being my wife?s uncle he and I obviously became very close over the years,? stated Island Construction CEO Zane DeSilva, who shot 86 among the amateur field while playing alongside opening day leader Delroy Cambridge.

?We thought this week?s tournament would be the perfect setting to do something for him because he was a member of Belmont and just won the club championship earlier this year.

?And there?s no doubt in my mind Frankie would have been playing this week had he still been here amongst us.?

DeSilva also has fond memories playing against Brewster for Somerset Eagles and then alongside him at BAA.

He added: ?I don?t know how many birdies can be made out there because I played today and didn?t make a single one. But the greens are rolling very true and you can make a few birdies if you?re putting well.

?I played alongside Delroy (Cambridge) today and I kept encouraging him to make birdies because Frankie is up there somewhere watching.

?I shot eleven over on the front and he (Delroy) was three-under and everybody was asking ?what?s happening? because usually when a guy is playing well you feed off of them. But had I not been playing with him I might have shot 20 over.

?At the end of the day we?re hoping we can raise maybe four, five or if we?re lucky nine thousand dollars.?
