Brooks, Bascome lead way
Ashley Brooks and Jenson Bascome are still the queen and king of Bermuda tennis.
Though beaten by Zarah DeSilva in the final of the ladies' singles at the recent Island Construction Open, Brooks retains top billing on the ladies' singles national rankings on the strength of greater activity. DeSilva is ranked second.
Bascome has consolidated his position as the Island's number one in men's singles with his second successive victory at the Pomander Gate tournament. The runner-up in that event, Jovan Whitter, has moved up to number five.
Donald Evans is also still the number two but both he and Bascome have significant points to defend at the Argus Open, which begins this weekend. This could open the door for the hard-hitting Andy Bray at number three or James Collieson, making a welcome return to local tournament activity. Kris Frick holds onto the number nine spot, with fellow youngster John Masters at 11.
Meanwhile, with Deborah Cheng having left the Island and Danielle Paynter also dropping off the list due to inactivity, the women's top ten has a new look.
Tara Lambert moves up to number four on the strength of her semi-final appearance, while improving 'B' winner Carrol Reid and runner-up Tracey Berrell advance dramatically to five and six respectively.
Island Construction quarter-finalist and Heineken 'B' winner Jo Tucker is at seven and Barbara Lambert, Lucy Windsor and Liz Osborne round out the top ten. Youngsters Jacklyn Lambert, Rachel Sawden, Morgan Lightbourne and Jasmine Quinn lurk ominously just outside the top ten.
In the ladies' doubles rankings, Laverne Stowe and Barbara Lambert maintain their 100 percent record with three wins out of three to retain their joint top ranking.
Inactive Wendy Gelhay stays at number three, Sheila Gomez and Tucker improve to four and five respectively, with the Lambert sisters, Crystal and Tara, moving up to number six. Pomander finalists Lucy Windsor and Liz Osborne appear at number ten for the first time.
In the men's doubles Jenson Bascome and Ricky Mallory confirmed their class by destroying pretenders Andy Bray and Chris Watson. The latter pair - who move up to joint number five - had pushed the top-ranked team all the way at last month's Heineken tournament, but were never given a chance to reach that level of play during the latest event. Semi-finalists Roger Marshall and David Jenkins move up to joint number three to give a solid look to the top of this category.
In mixed doubles there was almost no change at the top.
Consecutive victories for Laverne and Bascome keep Stowe cemented at the top and Bascome breathing down the neck of number one Mallory. Brooks, who was runner-up at the Island Construction with Mallory, improves to number four behind the daughter-and-mother twosome of Tara and Barbara Lambert. Eldon Daniels has a clear hold of the third men's spot.
The big movers in the mixed rankings were Carrol Reid and Johnny Moore, who took advantage of a favourable draw to reach the semi-finals, improving to numbers eight and four respectively.
The senior rankings are unchanged as senior events were not included in the Pomander tournament.
