Burchall headers give Rams title
Two superbly taken headers either side of the interval from Shannon Burchall ensured the Derek Bell Memorial Trophy remained at Bernard Park for another year.
North Village Rams prevailed 2-1 over PHC Raiders during an evenly contested battle last Saturday to maintain their grip on the showpiece they have held since its inception three years ago.
Burchall, in full predator mode, leapt from the bench late in the first half to cleverly head Rams out in front after connecting with a Casey Simons cross from the right side.
But Raiders hit back early in the second half when Sheridan (Baldy) Ming swung his right boot at a wayward Brian (Bulla) Anderson free-kick and redirected the ball past an anchored George Hayward in the Ram?s goal.
Raiders were unfortunate not to have taken the lead through a series of promising raids, including a vicious Anderson blast that rattled the bar, ultimately setting the stage for Burchall?s game clinching heroics.
Allowed to roam free in the middle, Burchall again pounced on a Simons cross in the box and steered the ball past Ty Williams to earn Rams the coveted hat-trick of Derek Bell Memorial titles.
Burchall was later chosen as man-of-the-match for his goal scoring prowess, beating out the likes of Elliott Jennings and Simons who were also inspirational in Ram?s triumph over Raiders.
?It was another successful event. The participation and the support we received from our colleagues was appreciated and we give a special appreciation to Dandy Town Roots for coming in at the last moment when Key West Rangers dropped out due to player unavailability,? stated North Village Community Club president Shervin Dill.
?Once again the players volunteered their time to help make it a successful financial event for us.?
All donations from last Saturday?s event are to go toward the Derek Bell Memorial Educational Trust Fund.
Bell, a former Hotels and Village utility player, died in a freak boating accident at Rocky Hill Bay, St.George?s in 2002.
In the day?s opening Commercial B Division makeup contest, Dandy Town Roots thumped Devonshire All-Stars 5-1 to clinch the championship in their inaugural season.
Roots tallied via goals from Darren (Duke) Simons, Sean Smith, Michael Wells, Lloyd Christopher and Paul (Rip) Cann.
All-Stars replied through Arnold Todd.
