Campbell to play in Testimonial
Bermuda is set to be treated to the batting talents of former star West Indies opening batsman Sherwin Campbell during this year's Cricket Testimonial match.
The Testimonial committee achieved a veritable coup in securing the services of Campbell, who has also captained Barbados and remains a part of the squad, for the 40-overs match set to take place at Lord's on September 29.
"We're pleased and very fortunate to get him, and feel that he'll bring the people out to see him bat and should be a real treat to those that do come," said Sinclair (Brinky) Tucker, spokesman and one of the main movers behind the the Testimonial.
"We tried to get some more outstanding players, but due to their schedules not permitting them at this time we were unable to do so. Hopefully next year, we'll be able to get them.
"We were able to get Campbell through the assistance of George Rock, and we'll be sending him a ticket tomorrow (today)."
It's likely that Campbell will bat for both teams while he may also be called on to perform a few hospitality-related functions, such as paying visits to a special seniors pavilion and making a radio appearance.
Campbell is a right-hand batsmen and occasional right-arm, off break bowler who grew up in the parish of St. Michael, admiring the likes of then Barbados and West Indies stars Desmond Haynes, Gordon Greenidge and Sir Garfield Sobers.
He would later become a star himself, breaking into the West Indies squad in 1994 as a 24-year-old. He went on to play in 51 Tests, averaging 32.82 runs, and 90 one-day internationals, averaging 26.24.
The Testimonial will, as usual, feature several local past greats, with the likes of Eldon Raynor, Jackie Durham, Gordon Campbell, Arthur Pitcher, Vernon (Super Fox) Foggo and many others on show.
Honorees for this year's event are former Cup Match stars Winton (Timmy) Edwards, Austin (Cheesy) Hughes and Leroy (Tubby) Richardson.
