Cancela strike stretches Revs record

New England Revolution completed their pre-season tour of Bermuda on a winning note at the National Sports Centre on Saturday night.

Uruguayan midfielder Jose Cancela scored the game?s only goal in the 55th minute directly from a free kick just outside the 18-yard box after he was felled plotting his way to goal to stretch his team?s overall unbeaten record playing in Bermuda to five matches.

After being helped to his feet by referee Lyndon Raynor, the 29-year-old left Jamaican ?keeper Ralston Robinson flat-footed as his strike curled over the wall and into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

It was a goal that knocked the wind out of the Jamaicans? sails and restored New England?s confidence after being held against their will by more youthful opponents, particularly in the opening half.

?I thought we didn?t pass the ball well at all in the first half,? admitted Revs coach Steve Nicol. ?But second half we were much better. Of course we want to win games, but at this stage of the season we also want to get into a rhythm and pass the ball about. And I thought we passed the ball a lot better in the second half.?

As for Cancela?s gem of a goal from a set piece, Nicol said: ?That was a great finish. Absolutely top quality.?

Cancela, who joined New England from Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa, tormented the Jamaicans throughout, combining his efforts in the middle of the park with those of fellow playmaker Shalrie Joseph, wearing the captain?s armband in the absence of Joe Franchino.

Though on the whole the Revs failed to stretch the Jamaican defence, at times forwards Willis Sims, Kyle Brown and Tony Lockhead looked deadly on the counterattack.

But it was the Jamaicans who nearly drew first blood when striker Joel Grant shot just over the bar after creating space for himself deep in New England terrain.

Minutes later Grant again got behind the Revs defence only to be denied this time by the linesman?s flag for offside.

It was a call Jamaican coach Wendell Downswell felt hard done by. ?That call might have made the difference,? he said afterwards. ?But that?s all part of the learning experience.?

Other than the brief mental lapse that paved the way for Cancela?s game-winner, Downswell felt his team gave a good account of themselves.

?It was a tremendous experience for the guys,? he said. ?We played against a team that played well methodically with a high level of discipline.

?I thought we made one mistake and suffered the consequences. And that is all it takes whenever you play against a good team. But apart from that I thought our guys played tactically well,?

While New England were clearly the better team towards the end of another absorbing match on the ?carpet?, possession for the most part was evenly shared and clear cut chances rare.

But the Revs did threaten.

First Joseph ballooned a shot over the bar and then Sims? give-and-go with Brown on the edge of the box resulted in the former?s shot being saved by Robinson in goal.

Robinson would also deny Cancela early in the second half while Sims just failed to get a boot to a rebound inside the area.

Yet nothing could prevent New England from converting the eventual game winner just as it appeared as though Jamaica would hang on for what would have been a second straight draw within 48 hours.

However, it wasn?t to be their night as the Revs began to show flashes of the brilliance that swept them all the way to last season?s Major League Soccer Final.
