Cann smashes 139 against Argentina
He supports Argentina in international football yet Bermuda allrounder Lionel Cann made it perfectly clear yesterday which side of the fence he was on as he produced a savage fireworks display with the bat against the South Americans that had spectators ducking for cover at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club grounds in King City, Toronto yesterday.
On a day that saw several new Bermuda records established, it was the prolific bat of Cann that overshadowed a maiden international century from Kwame Tucker (100) and another solid knock from Janeiro Tucker.
It was an innings that also provided those in attendance with an exhibition of raw power-hitting they?ll long remember as Cann sprayed the ground with sixes in all directions after surviving a chance on 11.
The master-blaster clobbered 139 runs ? a new individual Bermuda batting record ? off a mere 68 balls in 130 minutes of pulsating stroke-play that left many around the grounds awestruck.
Cann struck an incredible 13 sixes and eight fours and took a particular liking to the bowling of Donny Forrester and Gary Savage.
Forrester was the first to be put to the sword as Cann smashed 18 runs off the bowler?s first and only over of the match.
Savage then bore the brunt of Cann?s onslaught in the last over of the Bermuda innings as the hard-hitting batsman smashed 30 runs (five sixes) to carry his team to an imposing 371 for three in their allotted 50 overs.
Cann?s record-breaking innings bettered the previous best of 138 set in August 2005 by Clay Smith against Cayman Islands in Toronto.
It was also the St.George?s? Cup Match skipper?s first century wearing a Bermuda jersey.
Along with fellow centurion Kwame Tucker, Cann produced a new Bermuda fourth-wicket partnership record of 202 runs in 20 overs ? which is also believed to be the highest partnership record for all wickets at the national level.
Kwame Tucker, meanwhile, also feasted on an Argentine attack that paid a heavy price whenever they strayed wide, over pitched or bowled rank short.
The Bermuda wicketkeeper achieved a maiden international century off 135 balls in 196 minutes, and is now believed to be the first opening batsman to bat out the entire innings in an international match.
Batting from start to finish, Tucker struck ten fours and a six and reached the milestone in the 47th over.
Along with cousin Janeiro Tucker (79), the right-hand opening batsman added 128 runs for the second-wicket after Stephen Outerbridge (three) departed in the fourth over, trapped leg before in front of the stumps.
Azeem Pitcher (12) was also dismissed without really bothering the scorers, leaving the Tucker cousins and Cann to provide the fireworks.
At one stage Janeiro Tucker appeared destined for a century as he raced to 79. However, his innings came to a grinding halt in the 25th over when he dragged a Hernan Pereyra delivery onto his stumps.
He hit 12 fours and two sixes in 89 minutes.
Pitcher fell five overs later, caught behind by wicketkeeper Ale Ferguson off the bowling of Malias Paterlini.
The Argentines continued to shuffle around a seven-men bowling attack in a bid to dismiss Bermuda on a placid pitch, but failed to make further inroads as Cann launched a vicious one-man assault on the bowling.
Savage, Pereyra and Malias Paterlini claimed one wicket each to lead the Argentine bowling.
To their credit, Argentina made a much better showing with the bat, surprisingly withstanding a makeshift Bermuda attack containing debutant Malachi Jones and Stefan Kelly with the new ball and replying with a respectable 262 for five in their allotted 50 overs.
Openers Carlos Gibson (26) and Lucas Paterlini (70) shared in a 103-run opening partnership that frustrated Bermuda in the field for 18 overs.
And when the pair were both removed after Janeiro Tucker made the big breakthrough, solid knocks from Malias Paterlini (27), Savage (38) and Forrester (35) kept Bermuda gardening in the field, and the Argentines well on course to posting one of their biggest totals in the biennial regional competition.
Savage and Forrester added 74 runs for the fourth-wicket before the former became young Malachi Jones? first international wicket at the senior level in the 44th over.
At 234 for four with six overs remaining, the writing was well and truly on the wall.
Still, the Argentines battled on right to the end and seemed delighted alone with the mere fact they had scored over 250 runs against a team bound for next year?s World Cup in the Caribbean.
Tucker, who received treatment after being struck in the head fielding a ball in the mid-wicket region, was the pick of the Bermuda bowling with figures of two for 46 off eight overs with one maiden.
Kelly, Jones and skipper Irving Romaine each claimed one wicket apiece.
Bermuda take on Cayman Islands ? victors over struggling Canada yesterday by eight wickets ? at King City today.
