Cardinals B secure a league and cup double

The Cardinals B team did the league and cup double in the Ladies B league for the first time this season.

The team led by Iesha Castle and goalie Holly Simons were able to lift the league title from Swallows. The Police Orioles were the early favourites to take the championship after winning their first seven games, then injury and other commitments led to a few losses and they were caught and passed by the chasing pack.

The Swallows were in pursuit, but faltered to the Ravens in their last game of the season to allow the Cardinals to open a points gap and take the title. The Bermuda Hockey Federation Knockout Cup saw the Cardinals defeat the Canaries B team 4-0 at weekend.

In the Ladies A league the Swallows continued their winning ways overcoming the strong Bluebirds to lift their fourth consecutive title.

The Swallows, led by their captain Jenny Burrell and stellar midfield work from Liz Osbourne and goal keeper Donna Nicholson, were able to stave off all challenges.

However, Canaries forward Lisa De Silva was the run away leading goalscorer leaving Burrell behind by more than ten goals.

The Canaries took the BHF Knockout Cup by defeating the young Swifts. They had to defeat the Swallows in the semifinal and De Silva scored the winning goal in extra time. The Swifts were then dispatched easily by the experienced Canaries.

During the season, the Bluebirds, Swallows and Ravens all went on tours. The Swallows and Bluebirds participated at the 2002 Atlanta Cup and the Swallows and Ravens participated in a tournament in Dublin.

In the men's league The Chameleons completed the League and Cup double at the weekend.

The road to the league title had an early set back with the Chameleons being defeated by the last place Police Polecats.

However, the midseason return of Steve Moreton, combined with the steady goalkeeping of Mark Stevens the Chameleons were able to lift the title ahead of the pursuing second place Rebels.

For a first time in the league for a number of years, the top three leading goalscorers were all Bermudian with Simon Farrington (Rebels, 22) leading the way Mark Pettingill (Chameleons, 12) and Simon Van de Weg ( Rebels, 7).

The BHF Knockout Cup was an exact duplicate of last year with the Chameleons defeating the BCS Panthers 3-0. However, the end of season form of the young Panthers team gives all the other clubs food for thought over next season.

During the season, the Rebels travelled to the 2002 Atlanta Cup and placed third.

They took a team consisting of players from the Upstarts and BCS Panthers and missed the finals of the tournament by one point.

The junior programme this season had two "doubles".

The first being a double in the number of participating teams over last season - from three teams to six - and the second being the championship repeat of the Jaguars.

This season saw the addition of the new teams due to the popularity of the sport in the seven to 11 years age range.

The hope is that this league will be give a grounding to young players in the hope they then move onto the senior leagues.

Currently there are several members of the programme from last season who have made the transition to the senior team, most notably Benjamin Sheere who was the leading goalscorer for his champion Jaguars and scored three goals in the senior league for the Bermuda Combined Schools Panthers.
