Cardinals refuse to be detained by Police

It was a relatively quiet weekend for hockey with many of the Island's top women's players preparing to compete in the Central America and Caribbean games this week.

No men's games were played but a few key women's pairings took place.

In A league, Cardinals notched a 2-0 victory over the winless Police Orioles. Cards took the field and immediately began to exploit the defence with the pace and hard running of Lisa Ray and Candy Foggo.

The Police defence was able to absorb most of the pressure through central defender Gertie Barker but a defensive error eventually lead to a Cards goal.

The team was awarded a penalty corner and Lisa Ray stepped up to convert it.

The second half again saw the two sides playing an open game as advantage moved backwards and forwards. Lakae Dill eventually took possession of the ball to slot it past Ingrid Pitt for the 2-0 win for Cardinals.

Canaries and Ravens A squads split points this weekend after playing to a 2-2 draw. The match featured a number of national team players on their way to the CAC games.

Within the first ten minutes Caroline Black skilfully manoeuvred past a couple of Canaries to send a powerful hit into the circle.

Ravens centre-forward Emma Timperley caught it, making a quick pass to Ana Anton which resulted a first goal for Ravens.

The second came on a hard Stephanie Bullington pass to Timperley.

Canaries quickly answered as Lisa DeSilva scored on a penalty corner to the left of the Ravens' goalkeeper.

DeSilva then secured her second goal on a Rhonda Rawlins pass early in the second half.

But despite continued effort from both teams, no more goals were scored and the 2-2 result stood.

In the final A meeting Sunday, Swallows continued their winning ways against Swifts 2-1.

Swallows opened the scoring in the 20th minute when poor marking by the Swifts defence allowed left wing, Nicky Sanders to sweep the ball into the net.

But Swifts were back to level the score two minutes later when Kristan Law put Emily Leitch's free hit from the edge in the back of the net.

Swallows struck again before the break, however, with a Kirstie Kelly goal for the win.

Still undefeated in the B league, Swallows picked up a 4-0 result over Swifts B.

Swifts started aggressively, making Swallows work hard and fight for every ball but Jenny Burrell soon opened scoring and Jess Bowdleer followed shortly after to put the league leaders up 2-0 at the break.

Swifts continued to strong play in the second half with Keishae Robinson making several shots on the Swallows keeper. But Swallows had already put the match firmly out of their reach with two more goals from Burrell and Diane Moore.

After a tie by their A teams, Canaries and Ravens B squared off to a similar end result, nil-nil.

Third place Canaries took the game to the Ravens but the defensive work of Rachel Hucker and Melanie Symondson kept the scoreboard clear.

In the only other match Cardinals held on for a 1-0 win over the previously undefeated Orioles.

Patricia Holder netted the winner after a spectacular effort from Melanie Fullerton, who skilfully brought the ball single-handedly deep in Orioles' territory to make it available to Holder.
