Challenging season ahead for juniors
The Bermuda Triathlon Association's thriving junior programme continues to provide great opportunities for junior athletes with numerous races and training programmes for all abilities planned in 2003.
As in 2002, both the Tri Hedz Club, which has some 60 juniors, and the smaller TRex training group will be active with both groups planning to travel to the Magog Triathlon in Quebec, Canada which will host the Canadian 16-19 Junior Championships and the Canadian Eastern Junior Championships.
In addition, the Quebec Triathlon Federation are planning to select a large group of their leading junior triathletes to compete in the Shell Gold Cup Triathlon in Bermuda on July 6. The event will be followed by a week-long camp run by top British coach Steve Trew, assisted by coaches from the Quebec Federation.
In addition to Geoffrey Smith, Matthew Herring and Flora Duffy, a number of very promising juniors are starting to make their mark in the senior ranks.
Khamari Greaves, Coyatito Smith and Dominique Nanette have already had top ten finishes in sprint events and will be looking to progress further in 2003.
In the younger age groups, Caitlin Conyers, Kaitlyn Miller and Amy Fox, among the girls, and Justin Collis, Tim Fox, Geoffrey Burns, Dorian Armstrong and Mark Smith among the boys, should continue their winning ways. Thomas Godfrey, who was plagued by injury last year, is also expected to do well.
Further down the age groups, David Lunn, who coach David Morrison regards as one of the most exciting junior triathletes to emerge in recent years, together with Alex Godfrey and Alyssa Rose are all ones to watch.
