Champions Chameleons scramble narrow win
The top two men's teams of last year squared off over the weekend as defending champions Chameleons took to the field against a determined Rebels squad.
But in a hard fought match in which Rebels held the edge during much of the play, it was Chameleons who came away with a 2-1 victory.
Rebels were first on the scoreboard when they were awarded a penalty shot in the first half which Jamal Burgess nailed.
But Chameleons approached the second half determined not to suffer a loss so early in the season.
They fought their way to a successful scoring drive twice, with Peter Illston and Jonathan Dodd finding the net. Chameleons then held off a tired looking Rebels to take the 2-1 victory.
Upstarts secured a 2-0 victory over Police Polecats in the other men's game at Montessori.
Upstarts put in a solid defensive showing, holding back almost constant pressure by Police. But just after half-time John Uprichard fired in a decisive goal to put Upstarts on the board.
The second and winning goal then came on a penalty stroke, converted by Neil Carroll. Upstarts' keeper Alan Farrell distinguished himself by ensuring Police attacks were fruitless as his squad walked away with the win.
In the Women's A League, Cardinals took home their first win of the new season by knocking back Swifts 2-0.
Swifts were missing a number of experienced players and despite earning an early opportunity, Cardinals set the pace for the match.
Midway through the first half, Jennie Kelly slipped a goal past the keeper from the left post. Swifts' keeper Christina Barnard made some key saves to hold the score down until half-time, but Cardinals maintained the pressure during the second half, relentlessly attacking the goal for numerous short corners.
Lakae Dill scored off a short pass from Heidi Lynam to secure the game.
Swallows continued their winning streak in the other A league game of the weekend shutting down Bluebirds 1-0.
But if Swallows expected an easy outing, Bluebirds had other ideas, matching their opponents move for move and applying strong pressure throughout the game. Liz Osborne finally broke the deadlock with a great shot from the top of the circle to give Swallows the victory.
Cardinals racked up their third win in Women's B League play with a 2-0 defeat of Swifts.
The Reds outran and outplayed the young Swifts in the first half but couldn't find the finishing touch to score. Lise Baldwin eventually got them off the mark, picking up a loose ball in front of goal and tapping in.
Gail Thorne struck a powerful shot past the Swifts' keeper for the second and final goal of the game. First-time Swifts captain Stephanie Adderley shone in midfield despite the loss.
Canaries B hit the pitch successfully twice over the weekend. In their first outing they battered the Ravens to a 2-0 loss, netting both their goals in the first half. Nelleke Hollis and Ali Harvey secured the points for Canaries. Ravens' defence stood firm in the second half with Angie Rohlman playing an important role in holding Canaries to just two goals.
And in their second showing Canaries notched a 1-0 win over Orioles.
This was a more evenly matched game but Canaries' Nelleke Hollis scored on a penalty corner in the first half to take the win. Missed opportunities on both sides defined the second half.
Swallows' B side inflicted a 2-0 loss on Bluebirds, dominating the first half of the game with their midfield and forwards, leaving the defence with little to do.
Swallows scored just before the half-time whistle when Karen Campbell pounced on a ball off the keepers' pads and knocked it in. Mel Burns pushed the ball past the keeper to ensure a 2-0 victory for Swallows who - along with Cardinals - remain undefeated to date in B play.
Swifts' B squad recorded their first victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Ravens.
Ravens' defence held Swifts at bay for much of the match. But they missed a scoring opportunity of their own on a breakaway midway through the second half. Liz Quarterly was one-on-one with Christina Barnard in the Swifts' goal when Barnard made the crucial save. Swifts' Lucy Hollis shot from close range past the Ravens' keeper for the game's deciding goal.
