Champions flying in the big boys

Champions St. David?s clearly mean business ahead of today?s mouth-watering Eastern Counties final against Flatts having drafted in four guest players and flown back both OJ Pitcher and Delyone Borden from college in the US.

National team skipper Clay Smith, allrounder Lionel Cann, Warwick batsman Chris Douglas and St. George?s opener Oronde Bascome have all been named in the XI by the St. David?s selectors ? though seamer George O?Brien jr has not been declared fit to take part in the last and most prestigious county game of the season at Sea Breeze Oval.

Having packed their side with batsmen, skipper Sammy Robinson admitted yesterday that the game plan would be to win the toss and bat Flatts out of the game ? though the task might be easier said than done on an uneven wicket which has played poorly for most of the season.

Nevertheless, the St. David?s line up has a formidable look to it, and Robinson said he is confident they will ?do the business? in front of an expected packed house.

?I think any captain going into a big game with the team we?ve got would be very happy with the situation,? he said.

?We?re very heavy on batting and if we play to our potential we should be extremely difficult to bowl to. It wasn?t my decision to bring OJ and Delyone back, but I certainly welcome it and it will be good to have them in the team because they give us options with both the bat and ball.

?Our last county game against Cleveland we won convincingly (by seven wickets) and we are expecting a tougher challenge from Flatts because I know they will be very up for this game. But we?re in pretty good shape and I expect us to hold on to the cup if we play well.?

With the pressure on the challengers to bowl St. David?s out cheaply, Flatts have included a large number of players who can do a job with the ball, from Southampton Rangers seamer Ryan Belboda ? who has had a consistent season for the all-conquering team from the West End ? to Gary Brangman, Vernon Eve, Lloyd Fray and the skipper Derek Wright.

Rumours that Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock would be included have proven to be unfounded, however, though Wright is happy enough with the attack he will have at his disposal.

?St. David?s are obviously a very good side but I think we?ve got the players who are capable of putting them under some pressure,? he said.

?If St. David?s are looking to bat first then I?m not too worried about it. It might actually turn out to be their downfall because of the way the pitch at Sea Breeze has been playing this season ? particularly in the morning.

?But it will be up to us to be consistent and put the ball in the right areas often enough because there have been some batsmen this season who have managed to get in on that wicket and produce some big scores.

?We know they?re a good side though. We have a lot of respect for them and we hope it will be a good contest.?

Tomorrow, meanwhile, Southampton Rangers take on Bailey?s Bay at Sea Breeze and Social Club play Flatts at Devonshire Rec. in the semi-finals of the Premier Division Knockout Cup ? the last major competition of the domestic season.

Having seen off a struggling Western Stars side last weekend at St. John?s Field without any of their top players, the Belco Cup, two-day and limited overs champions are planning to wheel out the big guns this time around.

Leverock, Cann, Janeiro Tucker, Kwame Tucker and Malachi Jones all return after their Americas Championship exploits in Canada last week, leaving Bay with a mountain to climb if they are to end the season on positive note after being relegated from the limited overs top-flight.

In the First Division, Leg Trappers play PHC at Somerset Cricket Club while Somerset Bridge take on Cleveland at White Hill Field.

All cup games begin at 11 a.m..
