Champions on track to repeat

Champions JAMS are on the path to repeating their Division One success of a year ago, after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the AF Smith Corporate Team Squash Championships at the Devonshire Courts.

Led by Bermuda international Mel Caines, with Stephen Smith and cricketers Albert Steede and Justin Robinson pulling their weight in the handicap event, JAMS are matched against Geomagicians, who scored a narrow victory over Nothing to Boast About on Monday night.

Geomagicians, the beaten consolation finalists from last year, are made up of Chris Thornton, Mark Griffin and Tim Viney.

Aim to Win and M&S Nickers are competing to take on the winners of the first quarter-final. The team from AON Insurance Managers, which features Phil Barnes, Christine Barnes and Sally Gibson, will have their work cut out, however, as they will take on the formidable team of Nick Wiffen, Andrew Robinson and Bruce Robinson.

Wiffen burst onto the squash scene with victory in the Shell Divisional Handicap Tournament last month and, with the Robinson father-and-son combination, should prove too strong for the AON team.

The third quarter-final will feature three Bermuda players - Ryan Bell, Harry Mackenzie and Tessa Mackenzie. Last Minute Heroes must be slight favourites with a line-up that includes the Mackenzies and Michael Burke. Their opponents, Blind, Deaf and Dumb, have Bell, Cory Powell and Kim Carter attempting to take honours.

The final match sees CCS again in the role of underdogs against City Slickers, the number two seeds. The CCS team of Gavin Dent, Tom Quinn and Bob Platt have created a shock already by defeating Foreign Affair and, with the late withdrawal of Tommy Sherratt from City Slickers, another turn of the form books may be on the cards.

City Slickers still have a strong team, however, with Roger Sherratt, Jams Hubbard and Anthony White out to stop the CCS dream run.

The Division Two quarter-finals will pit Usual Suspects against EY Racquet Busters, Bang Bang against Moresby Squash Club, last year's winners What Ever against Bank of Bermuda, and EY Racquet Breakers against Hemisphere Howayas. Competition continues through Saturday.
