Champs retain titles

Kavin Smith and Anna Eatherley repeated as champions in the Maple Leaf 10k road race yesterday at Dockyard.

Smith led a field of 50 runners from start to finish and completed the course in 32.18 minutes, just five seconds off his 1997 record and two minutes, 38 seconds ahead of second-placed Sheldon Thompson in 34.56 minutes. Brett Forgessson was third in 35.31 minutes.

Eatherley won the women's title in contrasting fashion being pressed all the way by her friend and close rival Lynn Patchett. Eatherley edged home by six seconds, clocking 38.30 minutes to Patchett's 38.36 minutes. Third in the open female category was Alison Harvey in 43.33.

In the Masters' category, Devoe Whaley held on to win in 38.38 minutes after experiencing some cramps. He was followed across the line by Mark Albouy in 40.13. Mike Osborn rounded off the top three in the master's race in 40.25 minutes.

Zina Jones was a comfortable winner in the female Master category in 46.37. Finishing behind her was Terri Farnan in 49.42 and Coral Griffith in 50.20.

Senior Master runner, Harry Patchett finished fifth overall in 36.05, breaking his pervious record by a minute. Eddie Fisher was second in 42.34 and veteran, Peter Lever, was third in 47.21.

Shar-dae Whitter, 17, was first in the Under-19 females and established a record of 57.11 minutes for that age group.
