Charity wins as Island trio complete marathon

A trio of Bermuda businessmen all completed the London Marathon on Sunday, each of them raising funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Fifty two year-old Ian Coles led home the locals in a time of three hours, 31 minutes while veteran Giorgio Zanol, running his 41st marathon a day after his 65th birthday, clocked an impressive 3:36.

Youngest member of 'Team Bermuda', Stephen Dunkley, finished in 3:46.

"Conditions were typically English ? cold and wet!" said Coles. "And with 38,000 runners on the starting line, the first few miles were like a rugby scrum.

"I got hit so hard at one point that my watch flew off. But the London crowds are legendary. There were an estimated one million spectators lining the entire route, cheering and urging the runners on.

"And to be able to participate in a competitive event which includes current Olympic gold medallists and world record holders, is unique in all of sport ? it's an amazing experience."

Zanol might have been the biggest winner of the day as he raised more than $30,000 for JDRF, with Argus Insurance also contributing $5,000 to the Bermuda Diabetes Association in recognition of his efforts.

The Lindo's supermarket boss also ran two minutes faster than in the same race a year earlier.

For Dunkley, it was another marathon to tick off his list as he attempts to complete all five in the newly-created World Marathon Majors series.

Having already run New York, Boston, Chicago and now London, Dunkley heads off to Berlin in September to run the last of the world's five premier international races.

Swans' Running Club member Cal (Marathon Man) Steede completed his 61st marathon in Boston on Monday.

Running in the Masters age group, Steede clocked a respectable 3:33:20 in what was his 13th Boston race.

His best time for the 26.2 mile distance is 2:49.

Of 15 Swan's members who ran in Boston, Danny Kendall was the fastest, crossing the line in 2:54:17.

Other Bermuda finishers included: Marco Zanol 3:27:29; Ronald Stan 3:49:27; Luke O'Connor 3:52:04; Tony Steele 3:53:11; Peter Dunne 4:11:32; Melissa Durrant 4:14:37; Judith Marsden 4:14:44; Terri Durrant 4:16:23; Keith Barker 4:21:02; Jatinder Kamra 4:31:39; Sarah Kreuzer 5:04:31; Scott Kreuzer 5:04:31; and Tara Oakhem 5:08:57.
