City finalise Fowler deal
Shaun Goater would form a "powerful unit" at Manchester City alongside Robbie Fowler and Nicolas Anelka, according to club captain Steve Howey.
City yesterday agreed terms with Leeds striker Fowler having offered a fee of around ?7-million with his club the day before.
Fowler, who currently earns ?42,000-a-week at Leeds, is understood to be taking a ?7,000-a-week pay cut to link up with City and will sign a four-and-a-half year deal.
The player will undergo a medical at Maine Road today with Blues boss Kevin Keegan hoping to have him available for the trip to Newcastle on Saturday. If everything goes smoothly, Keegan will have seven strikers at Maine Road and speculation is mounting over whether some may be asked to move on.
On Monday the said that struggling Premiership side Bolton Wanderers had opened talks with Goater about a transfer but in his exclusive column in today's the player denied any such contact.
"Personally, I don't get caught up with what is in the newspapers," he writes. "As the result of past experiences I prefer to not even read them. Even if a player hears something about a team being interested in them and even if they want to leave, the effort, first and foremost, has to come from their club.
"I have said on many occasions that I want to stay at City and so as far as I am concerned if you're happy there is no need to make any sort of noise."
Yesterday, City captain Howey said he would welcome the signing of Fowler, who has struggled for form and fitness since joining Leeds from Liverpool in November, 2001.
"If it happens then I believe it is a great signing," Howey said. "I believe that Robbie Fowler is the best finisher in the land and to have him with Nicolas Anelka along with strikers like Shaun Goater available as well will make us a powerful unit."
