Classic hopefuls eager to make an impression
SOMERSET
Definites
Albert Steede: Captain, r/h batsman - Arguably Bermuda's best batsman, Steede has proven himself a big day player, having scored an aggregate of 813 runs since making his Cup Match debut in 1989, and averaging more than 36 each time he takes the crease. Guided Somerset to victory last year, his first as skipper.
Dexter Basden: Vice-captain, r/h batsman - A dependable early order bat, who can be slotted anywhere in the top four and a premier slip fielder. Preceded Steede as skipper. A level headed voice of reason when things get hectic on or off the field.
Richard Basden: r/h batsman, r/h medium pace - Missed last year's celebrations due to a hand injury that cost him most of the season. A classy middle order bat who runs well between the wickets and is a useful change bowler.
Janeiro Tucker: r/h batsman, r/h medium pace - Bermuda's leading all-rounder. Who can forget the match saving century scored at St. George's in 1999? Scored 60 during the first innings a year ago, enabling Somerset to declare with a solid advantage.
Dwayne Leverock: l/h leg-break bowler, r/h batsman - The most in-form slow bowler at the moment, Leverock has the capability to tie down an end and frustrate the batting side. A useful middle to low order bat. Destroyed St. George's during the second innings a year ago with five wicket haul.
Wendell White: l/h batsman, l/h medium fast - MVP of a year ago based on spectacular first innings knock of 91, will be looking to avoid the sophomore jinx.
Hasan Durham: r/h batsman, l/h leg break bowler - One half of the `Dynamic Spin Duo' - the other being Leverock. Seized five wickets during St. George's first innings a year ago.
Probables
Kwame Tucker: Wicketkeeper, r/h batsman - Has not been in the best of form all season, but has two things in his favour: one, he is the only recognised wicketkeeper in the squad and two, he is a proven performer on the Cup Match stage.
Irving Romaine: r/h batsman - Heavy hitter in the middle order. Has been unfortunate in never being placed in a position to show his true talent in Cup Match.
Corey Hill: r/h medium fast, r/h batsman - Multi-talented player who can swing the tide with bat or ball, and a real fighter, but must keep emotions in check.
Sheridan Ming: r/h batsman - With Curtis Jackson likely to get the chop, a much improved Ming looks in line for his debut. A very correct batsman who runs well between the wickets.
On the bubble
Leon Place: r/h batsman, r/h medium pace - A disastrous 2000 classic hinders chances of a return for the centenary.
Curtis Jackson: l/h batsman - Enjoyed break-out year in 1999, but the run well has been dry the past two.
Jacobi Robinson: r/h medium-pace, r/h batsman - Member of Bermuda Under-19 youth squad will likely be held back for 2002, when Somerset are hosts.
Dennis Pilgrim: l/h medium pace, r/h batsman - A hard working dedicated player, who if he was a member of Somerset's league team would be automatic.
Maybe next year
Jermaine Warner, Reid Jones, Winston Trott Jr., Charles Swan, Sammy Robinson, Jason Williams, Stephen Outerbridge.
ST. GEORGE'S
Definites
Charlie Marshall: l/h batsman - Was drafted in to win the cup back for St. George's and would enjoy nothing more than beating rival skipper Albert Steede. A hard hitting and entertaining middle order batsman, who holds the colt record for highest score, notching a century on debut in 1980.
Herbie Bascome: r/h medium fast, r/h batsman - Vilified for losing the trophy last year and subsequently resigned as captain. Bermuda's most consistently effective pace bowler. Can provide a flurry at the tailend as a batsman.
Glenn Blakeney: l/h batsman - Without doubt the most attractive batsman on the Island, and the man Somerset will most want to see the back of. Second only to the great Colin Blades, with an average of 46.29.
Lionel Cann: r/h medium, r/h batsman - Missed last year due to tour of England with St. David's. Will bring explosive bat, lively medium pace and passion back to the stage this time around.
Probables
Dale Fox: r/h fast - After stumbling around in the cricketing wilderness in recent times, Fox has emerged from the forest with renewed strength, but can his body hold up to two days of intense cricket?
Gregg Foggo: l/h medium-fast - Injuries have derailed pacer this season, but has in his favour the fact that he plays for St. George's and their need to bowl Somerset out twice.
Mark Ray: r/h batsman - Not much has been heard from Ray this season, but history shows that Ray comes to play when the Cup Match curtain goes up.
David Adams: r/h spin - Among the missing for two years, Adams is back, but the question remains whether this latest version of `Chick' can match that of the previous, who struck fear in a batsman's heart.
Clay Smith: r/h batsman, r/h off-break - Tonight will provide the answer as to whether selectors have really accepted Smith's apology, especially if he manages a big knock during the final trial.
Phillip Pitcher: r/h batsman - Half of the most dynamic opening tandems in the Island with Glenn Blakeney. Scores runs in bushels, something St. George's will be keen to do. Place may hinge on final trial.
Jason Anderson: wicketkeeper, r/h batsman - Heir apparent to Dean Minors, but will St. George's actually go for a specialist wicketkeeper or opt for combination wicketkeeper/batsman such as Blakeney or bring back young Chris Foggo?
On the bubble
Chris Foggo: wicketkeeper, r/h batsman - Chose St. David's tour over St. George's last year, and promising early order bat could feel the repercussions this time around.
Dexter Smith: l/h batsman - Out of sight, out of mind. Smith's decision to move to England may cost him his spot, despite his contention that playing in the home of cricket has only served to improve his game.
Cleon Scotland: r/h batsman, r/h off break - Benefited from the absence of several players in the St. David's' tour party in being included last year. That luxury no longer exists.
Eugene Foggo: l/h batsman, l/h spin - Went cheaply in both innings in 2000 and took but one wicket, decision to include or exclude may hinge on whether the wicket is geared for the slow bowlers.
Maybe next year
Ryan Steede, Kenny Phillip, Sinclair Gibbons, Peter Philpott, Detroy Smith, Ankoma Cannonier, Kameron Fox, Mackie Crane, Phillip Burgess, Delyone Borden, Michell Paynter.
