Classy Canada hand Bermuda a lesson
Bermuda 0 Canada 4
Canada's Under-17 national team handed Bermuda's youngsters a lesson on the opening night of the International Youth Tournament at National Sports Centre on Sunday.
Capitalising on a defence oriented Bermuda outfit, the young Canadians gave their hosts a torrid time, executing impressive off-the-ball running, precision control and some penetrative attacking as they stormed to a convincing win.
Goals from Myles Davis (36th minute) and Andrea Lombando (61st) followed by two late strikes from second half substitute Anus Burke (88th and 90th) ultimately raised the bar beyond Bermuda's reach.
The home team were reduced to chasing shadows, managing only a few isolated forays into their opponents' half.
In fact, after Davis gave the visitors a deserved first-half lead, the contest was as good as over, such was the superiority of a Canadian attack spearheaded by Lombando, Hector Contreras and Sherwin Emmanuel who caused the local defence all sorts of problems.
Prior to the opening goal, though, Bermuda did threaten to score on two separate occasions. But both Cornell Castle and Angelo Simmons could only hold their heads in despair after watching their solo efforts roll harmlessly into the safe arms of Canadian `keeper Roberto Giacomi.
At the other end, Lombando and Contreras continued to probe, the pair combining beautifully down the right flank.
Against the run of play, Bermuda's Tyrell Burgess managed to get in a long range effort that went wide while midway through the half Lombando did well to chase down a long ball on the left side, trapping it just inches from the touchline before providing an appetising cross that was hastily cleared for a corner.
From the ensuing kick, Contreras just failed to connect with a header as Canada continued to pressure.
Bermuda held firm up to this point but with half-time approaching the complexion of the match changed when Bermuda `keeper Michael Harvey was involved in a horrific collision with defender Georgio Fox, bringing the match to a screeching halt.
Failing to shake off the effects of the agonising blow, Harvey was replaced by Jason Wade.
Hobbling back towards the Bermuda bench, the young goalie was met with an encouraging round of applause from the local crowd.
However, the incident seemed to momentarily stun Bermuda and within two minutes of the restart Davis had given the visitors a deserved lead with a fierce drive that whistled inside the near post.
Bermuda's Wayne Bean was booked for rough play as Canada carved out two chances to increase their lead before referee John Engstrom signalled the break.
Canada picked up where they left off at the start of the second half with another goal always seeming imminent.
Lombando doubled Canada's lead in the 61st minute and it was left to Burke to apply the finishing touches with two opportunistic strikes.
In the opening game of the tournament Jamaica beat Barbados 5-1.
Bermuda were due to meet Barbados last night at the National Sports Centre with Canada and Jamaica squaring off in the preceding match.
