Clay will be back

The good news for Bermuda over the weekend wasn?t restricted to Saturday?s victory at the Lisburn Cricket Club.

Skipper Clay Smith, forced to retire hurt with a painful hamstring pull during the defeat against Ireland on Friday and fearful he might not participate any further in the tournament, now believes he can make a quick recovery.

Following extensive treatment from physio Daniel Morgan and rest over the weekend, Smith is again expected to sit out today?s match against Denmark at Cliftonville, but could be passed fit in time for tomorrow?s game against Uganda.

?At the moment, the injury?s feeling pretty good,? said Smith.

?I?m thinking two or three days at the most. I?m definitely looking to play a part in this tournament somehow or the other.

?However, if the players play the way they did against UAE they can do without me.

?It?s always good to know your team?s good enough to play without you. That?s what it?s all about. We?re not a one-man team, the show must go on with or without me and I?m very proud of the guys for a stellar performance.?

With Saturday?s win opening the door for possible automatic qualification to the 2007 World Cup ? the top two in the six-team group will book a spot in the ICC Trophy semi-finals in Dublin next week as well as their ticket to the West Indies in two years? time ? Smith remained upbeat about his team?s chances.

?I always said if we could win one of the first two games, we?d be in with a chance of qualification.

?Monday?s another big one with Denmark, if we can get past them we?re on our way.?

The Danes have so far beaten both Uganda and USA, thumping the Americans by 103 runs on Saturday, and along with the undefeated Irish sit on the top of the group, with Bermuda lying fourth behind UAE, equal on points but with an inferior run rate.

But Denmark still have to play both Ireland and UAE, and Bermuda will be aware that if they can defeat them today it would give their qualification hopes a massive boost.
