Clemens banned for five games

NEW YORK New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens was suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing at Toronto's Alex Rios.

Yankees manager Joe Torre was suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount after Tuesday's incident. Both teams were issued warnings after Toronto pitcher Josh Towers hit New York's Alex Rodriguez earlier in the game, Major League Baseball said in a news release.

Torre is scheduled to serve his suspension tomorrow when the Yankees play at Cleveland, while Clemens' suspension will begin the same day unless he appeals the ruling.

A message seeking comment from Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo wasn't immediately returned.

Clemens hit Rios in the back with a seventh-inning fastball, four innings after both benches cleared when Towers hit Rodriguez in the back of his leg. No punches were thrown either time the teams left their dugouts and went onto the field.

The Yankees won the game 9-2 as Clemens raised his record to 4-5.

Rodriguez, Yankees coaches Larry Bowa and Tony Pena, and Toronto's Matt Stairs, Towers and coach Brian Butterfield were given undisclosed fines.
