Cleveland scorer follows a family tradition
They say apples never fall far from the tree.
And Cleveland County cricket statistician Jovanna Douglas is living proof as she continues to carry her family's sports legacy.
The second generation cricket scorer is the daughter of well-known cricket umpire Steven Douglas and niece of former Cleveland, St.George's Cup Match and Bermuda wicketkeeper Allan Douglas and top sprinter Troy Douglas.
And while she hasn't participated in track and field or cricket, Douglas has quietly made a name for herself on the sidelines as Cleveland's chief statistician, team selector and arguably the First Division club's biggest fan ? all the time inspired by her father, Steven.
"My father encouraged me because at the time there was nobody else around to score," Douglas explained. "And I've been doing it ever since.
"My father is my biggest inspiration and I learned everything from him.
"My mother (Rose-Anna) also kept score. I used to sit in my little pumpkin seat while my mother kept score during cricket matches."
Douglas has been scoring Cleveland matches for the past three years and says she enjoys every minute of it.
"I've never had a problem scoring, and I'm really enjoying doing it," she added.
She ranks among a growing list of local women who sacrifice their spare time to provide an essential service.
As for the heat and long hours, Douglas says: "I don't it mind it . . . after all I'm a summer baby."
Douglas' father, Steven, is pleased to see his daughter playing an important role in the game.
"I always help as much as I can by giving her various cricket law books to read and answer any questions she asks," he said.
"I hope that she is able to obtain full certification from ACS (Associate Cricket Umpires and Scorers) so that she can be just as qualified as I am. Then anytime an international team comes here she will be qualified enough to do the scoring. It would save bringing in a scorer.
"We (Bermuda) have One-Day International status now and once our pitch is ready we can host full internationals. Then when the ICC bring a top match referee in we should have a certified umpire and scorer to do the game."
