A day after celebrating victory in the inaugural 20/20 competition, St. David's crashed to their first loss of the season when their former player-coach guided Cleveland to a close two-wicket win at St. David's on Sunday.

Still one of the best batsmen in Bermuda at pacing a run chase, Smith scored 50 not out after he and Carlton Smith (79) shared in stand of 143 for the sixth wicket to set up Cleveland's victory with came with only two balls to spare.

The victory served as an indication of Cleveland's intention to be competitive this season as they now sit on top of the Premier Division tables with two wins from two outings. It also sets the stage for what could be an exciting season in the Premier Division where defending champions Social Club have also suffered an early loss before bouncing back with a resounding victory over a St. George's side that could find the going tough this season having lost several players in pre-season.

Cleveland will go in search of victory number three on Sunday when they travel to play a Devonshire Rec side still looking for their first win of the season. Rec have been boosted by the signings of Steven Bremar from Warwick, Mackie Crane from St. David's, David Bhagwan from Police and former St. George's pair Allan Douglas and Wilbur Burt but losses to St. David's and Somerset leave them in the losers' bracket. A first home match of the season for the newly promoted team may bring about a change in fortunes, though Cleveland have already shown they won't be pushovers.

Police, who were promoted along with Rec last season, entertain Southampton Rangers in their second match of the season, hoping to add to their opening day win over St. George's. The east enders, a top four finisher last season, desperately need a win to boost their Belco Cup prospects next month. They meet St. David's in one of the two semi-finals and, ironically, meet the same team on Sunday when they travel to Lord's to meet their neighbours.

In Sunday's other match, Somerset host Social Club. Both teams have a win and a loss from their two matches.

First Division teams will see action on both Saturday and Sunday. Tomorrow, PHC will meet Willow Cuts at White Hill Field, Flatts host Leg Trappers at St. David's and Warwick take on Somerset Bridge.

Three more matches are scheduled for Sunday as Bridge meet Willow cuts in a west end derby, while Warwick entertain Bailey's Bay and Western Stars take on PHC.

l The Bermuda Cricket Board this weekend announced a training squad to prepare for a trip to Canada next month. Eleven newcomers have been added to the original squad, including Glenn Blakeney of Bailey's Bay who returns to the national team setup after a long absence and Oronde Bascome of St. George's, a former youth team player.

There are several opening batsmen among the newcomers, including Bascome, Blakeney and Fiqre Crockwell of PHC who has enjoyed a good start to the season since joining them from St. David's. Also invited to train with the squad are Leg Trappers' top order batsmen, captain Stephen Drake and John Woolnough, while St. David's opener Chris Foggo get another opportunity with the national team, as does yet another opener, Dion Stovell, of Southampton Rangers. Jason Anderson's move from St. George's to PHC has resulted in an invitation for the opening batsman-wicketkeeper. George O'Brien gets another chance while Somerset captain Jacobi Robinson and Nakia Smith of Social Club complete the new additions to the training squad.

Original members of the training squad are: Irving Romaine (capt), Rodney Trott (vice capt0, Janeiro Tucker, Stephen Outerbridge, David Hemp, Jekon Edness, Stefan Kelly, OJ Pitcher, Dwayne Leverock, Ryan Steede, James Celestine, Kevin Hurdle, Arthur Pitcher, Delyone Borden, Tamauri Tucker, Dennico Hollis, Sammy Robinson, McLaren Smith, Kyle Hodsoll, Azeem Pitcher.

The national selectors will choose the 15 playets for the tour during the week of June 2. The team leaves for Canada on June 25 to play three one day internationals.
