Clubs at odds after row over missing team sheet
A battle involving First Division clubs Paget and St.David?s is continuing to be fought behind the scenes following an October 31 league fixture at Lords which was postponed after the home team allegedly failed to produce an official team sheet to the referee on time.
While Bermuda Football Association (BFA) have yet to make a ruling on the matter, both teams remained at odds yesterday over just who should receive maximum points.
?Basically we feel that we should receive the points,? argued Paget player Ornette Fough. ?The referee (Anthony Francis) awarded us the points because St.David?s did not have their team sheet available on time.
?So it was actually a default because they did not have their paper work in order.
?But it?s been two weeks now and nobody has said anything else about the matter, but the referee told us that we should receive the points.?
However, St.David?s player/coach Otis Minors disagreed, claiming the referee had actually showed up late to the ground ? without either of his linesmen ? and found both clubs warming up on the pitch.
?We were already on the field warming up and then we saw the referee show up with a little girl in the parking lot,? he recalled.
?Then the next thing we hear Paget players thanking us for the points after the referee had called the game because our team sheet was not in. Now how can someone call a game with both teams out on the field warming up?
?There really is no explanation for this and I feel this matter is still up in the air.?
Meanwhile, Francis yesterday denied ever awarding Paget the points before defending his decision to call off the ?Hallowe?en Day contest at Lords.
?I can?t award them (Paget) the match . . . that?s not my job,? he said. ?All the details are actually in my BFA report and it?s not my job to go looking for team sheets.
?Clubs have already received a directive stating team sheets must be handed to the match official a half-hour before kick-off, and that wasn?t done.?
Francis confirmed Paget had submitted their team sheet a half-hour before the game was due to start while St.David?s, he said, failed to produce theirs.
?I saw their team (St.David?s) out on the field warming up but I didn?t know who their coach or manager was,? Francis added.
The referee also denied the home team?s claims he had turned up at the ground late.
?I actually arrived there 40 minutes before the start of the game,? he said. ?They (St.David?s) might have seen me late . . . but that doesn?t have anything to do with me. And according to the time I wrote on Paget?s team sheet when I received it, it was twelve o? clock.
?And I gave St.David?s an extra ten minutes to forward their team sheet to me before I finally decided to leave the ground ? and to this moment I still don?t have their team sheet.
?What am I supposed to do? I can?t start a game with only one team and it?s not my job to go hunting for team sheets.?
When contacted yesterday, BFA general secretary David Sabir said the matter was currently being looked into and that a final decision could be reached sometime this week.
