Clubs to decide cricket's future

Cricket clubs will decide tonight whether to endorse national coach Mark Harper's call to have the sport revert to a two-division format that would feature an eight-team Premier Division and a First Division containing the remaining sides.

The meeting is being held at Warwick Workmen's Club, starting at 7.30 p.m.

The coach's call for change originally came when he was asked by Bermuda Cricket Board of Control to provide a plan with recommendations for the development of the sport.

Harper's contention is that having all 15 clubs operate as they do now in one division doesn't help development.

He has pointed out that teams would benefit if they were more evenly matched which would be the case if the stronger teams were placed in a separate division.

His proposal is for an eight-team Premier Division with seven club sides and another team consisting of under-21 squad players.

Bermuda cricket last operated with the Super Eight league in 1998.
