Clubs upset over unprepared pitch

Southampton Rangers and St.George's cricket officials are upset after having had their respective Premier Division matches at Sea Breeze Oval called off over the past two weekends.

With Southampton - currently on a tour of England - in the thick of the title hunt, player/coach Clevie Wade was reported to have been disturbed by Bermuda Cricket Board of Control's decision to award his team only six points after they turned up at Sea Breeze Oval on August 4 to find that their match against Flatts had been called off because the pitch wasn't properly prepared.

Had the match gone ahead, Rangers could have earned as many as 16 points with a victory.

Just last weekend, St. George's also had their fixture at the same venue against Bailey's Bay scrapped for the same reason - although BCBC officials are said to be still awaiting the umpires' report before determining what course of action to take.

"First of all I must say that we are very disappointed that the match wasn't played," said St. George's club president Neil Paynter. "But I would have to confer with my skipper and selection committee to find out what position they would like to take on the matter."

No one was available to comment on behalf of Southampton yesterday as the club's cricket officials are understood to be on tour with the team.

However, Bailey's Bay president Allen Walker did shed some light on circumstances surrounding the cancelled games.

"It's not like each week we haven't had a roller confirmed," said Walker. "Every week we have had a roller confirmed but for some reason or other it just hasn't shown up.

"Apparently someone forget to deliver one to us but as president I should be informed prior to the weekend whether we are getting one (roller) or not so it would give me every opportunity to look elsewhere to find another one."

Walker explained that his club had gone through the proper channels to inform the BCBC about the situation.

"We have been in contact with them (BCBC) and they have offered to assist us or try to correct the problem in any way," insisted Walker.

"And from what I understand the Board did make a decision that they were not going to reschedule any games, unless it's a rain date."

With Bay scheduled to host the second round of the Eastern Counties competition tomorrow, Walker added that every effort had been made to ensure that the field at Sea Breeze would be ready for the clash between champions St.David's and challengers Flatts.

"We will have a roller this weekend," he assured. "It just so happened that last week for whatever reason it didn't show and no one called to let me know about the situation."

BCBC president Reggie Pearman said yesterday: "We haven't received a report as of yet. So until we obtain one, no decision will be made."
