Clubs urged to support Harper report

Cricket chief El James yesterday urged local clubs to support the recommendations of national coach Mark Harper during this morning's meeting at Warwick Workmen's Club (10.00 a.m.), called by Bermuda Cricket Board of Control.

"I know it's difficult for some to adjust to change, but in order for Bermuda cricket to keep up with the times and move forward we have to implement changes and we are asking the clubs to come aboard and assist in the progress that he is aiming to achieve," said the BCBC president.

At today's special meeting the board are not just calling on club representatives to come out in full force, but also players and umpires.

All will be invited to offer input regarding the sweeping changes to the structure of local cricket put forward by Harper, who has spent much of the past four months since his appointment evaluating the local scene.

In addition to changing the structure of local cricket, Harper's report, which has been circulated to clubs, touches on such topics as coaching, cricket in the schools, discipline, summer camps, scholarships and training camps, tours, cricket festivals, national selectors and selection guidelines and pitches and grounds.

"He has come up with a wide range of suggestions and positive input on ways to lift the standard of play in the Island, obviously being influenced to point out our problems after seeing how many of the smaller nations we used to beat in the ICC tournament have gone ahead of us," said James.

"It's important for the clubs to play a role and help us build better programmes, improve on what we have now in place and we can only do this by having some additional positive ideas from the members who we are urging to come out in full force."
