Coaching the coaches to coach the youth
As part of ambitious plans to take the game of cricket to greater heights, Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) will be holding a seminar this Saturday for all youth coaches at the BF&M offices.
The six-hour seminar is geared toward preparing local youth coaches for next month?s England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Level One coaching certificate course.
Plans are presently in the works to invite a representative from the ECB to Bermuda to conduct the course, BCB senior executive Allen Richardson said.
The former St. David?s and St. George?s opening batsman, responsible for overseeing youth cricket domestically, attended last month?s International Cricket Council (ICC) Americas Region Conference/Inductory cricket course in Mexico.
This weekend?s seminar, Richardson envisions, will be the first step toward helping to better ?develop? our coaches.
?When I first joined the Board I immediately saw this as an area of need and so I?ve jumped in head first,? he said.
?This is why I attended the recent conference in Mexico to pick up a few tips and try to encourage all of our youth coaches and impart some of the knowledge and basic skills I think all of our coaches should have.?
The seminar, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at BF&M, is open to all of the Island?s youth coaches.
Richardson added: ?I am looking for excellence and commitment from our youth coaches to deliver a good product for our youth. We are also looking at offering our assistance to help physical education teachers within the school system as well.?
Richardson said he also hopes to find various new means to improve the overall youth cricket programme in Bermuda for next season and also kick start the Island?s ICC 2007 Under 19 World Cup qualifying bid.
?We?re looking to revamp our national youth programme and if we are going to offer a quality product then it?s important we must have individuals who can deliver in an expert manner,? he added.
?This will provide our youngsters with the best opportunity to learn the various techniques. What we?re really trying to achieve here is providing the best possible way of learning the very basics of the sport from a young age.?
