Collieson finishes season in style
James Collieson was delighted to push his record against fierce tennis rival Andy Bray up to 5-2 this weekend and end the Englishman?s chances of taking the domestic Grand Slam.
With Bray winning the opening three tournaments of the summer, Collieson claimed his first title of the year with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Bray on Sunday in the Southampton Princess Grand Prix.
?To be honest I didn?t even think about it while we were playing,? said Collieson, who has struggled with both his motivation and consistency last year despite a strong start when he beat Bray in the first round of the XL Open qualifying.
?I just wanted to get the win. This tournament is the only one with a decent prize (three nights at the Southampton Princess) not just a flimsy trophy so that was a bit of an incentive plus they are nice courts and it is always a fun atmosphere.
?Andy and I always have good games and we enjoy playing each other. There is a pretty massive drop-off in standard after us out of the players based here, so it is good to play each other in the finals.
?We both raise our games when we play so even though it is late in the season and the training maybe isn?t what it was, we made a pretty good game out of it.
?It?s nice to get the win after a summer of struggling a bit. I am having trouble with motivation but if I come into a tournament fit and with enough racquets strung then I will always do alright.?
Collieson beat Bray in the XL before Bray returned the favour in the final of the Heineken. The Englishman, a double gold medallist in the Island Games in Gibraltar this summer, also took the Island Construction and the Argus titles, with Collieson beaten in the semi-finals of both of those events.
