Coral Beach action heating up

Any fear the unseeded pair of Carol Reid and Johnny Moore might have held over the prospect of meeting second seeds Ann Manning and Courtland Boyle dissipated with the threatening clouds hanging over Coral Beach Club yesterday as both pairs were beaten in the second round of the BLTC Invitational.

Lavern Stowe and David Jenkins, themselves unseeded, knocked out Reid and Moore 6-3, 6-2 after earlier taking care of E.Hearn and Joe Scalia 6-0, 6-1, while Veronica Dunkerley and Mark Cordeiro upset Manning and Boyle in a thriller, 7-6 (4), 7-5.

Meanwhile Earl Leader, top seed in the Men's 45, defeated David Mills in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, Craig Brand beat Ronald Cole 6-1, 6-0 and Roy Weddleton stopped Mike Grace 6-1, 6-1.

Eugene Simmons surprised veteran Vernal Davis with his superior conditioning on the way to a 6-1, 3-1 lead when Davis was forced to retire.

In the Ladies Doubles, Debbie Harper made a successful return to competitive play when she teamed with her top seeded partner Gill Butterfield to defeat Ann Brown and Nell Mayotte 6-0, 6-0.

One of the day's more exciting matches saw Sally Hurlbut and Faith Bascome come from a set down to defeat her fellow American opponents H.Biddle and J.Grantham 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
