Corporal punishment could affect cup semi
It?s almost a safe bet that Raymond Beach, Chris Caisey and Seion Darrell will all be on their best behaviour over the weekend.
The three Premier Division players are due to clash during Sunday?s FA Cup semi-final at BAA Field involving Devonshire Cougars and 2004 champions Dandy Town.
However, before the trio ? all soldiers in the Bermuda Regiment ? can even begin thinking about kicking a football, they will have to find a way to keep on the good side of their platoon commanders at Warwick Camp.
Bermuda Regiment will be holding a training exercise over the weekend that concludes late Sunday morning.
understands that Devonshire Recreation Club officials have considered submitting a written request to have their two players, Beach and Caisey, excused from this weekend?s training exercise.
?We have discussed submitting a request, but we were told that the training exercise is expected to be over well before kick-off time,? a Cougars team official stated.
Beach and Caisey were recruited into the Bermuda Regiment last January while Town?s Darrell is nearing completion of the second of a three-year stint.
?Other than that, we are getting ourselves prepared for Sunday and so far things are coming along according to plan,? the official added.
It was also learned yesterday that Cougars centre half Ijahmon Mallory might be fit enough to suit up on Sunday.
Mallory, who transferred from Somerset Trojans at the end of last season, injured his left knee in a tackle during his team?s previous outing at the Den.
FA Cup action kicks off at BAA Field at 2.30 p.m.
PHC and Dandy Stars lock horns in the Women?s FA Cup semi-final at 12.30 p.m.
Beach sat out Cougars? March 19 FA Cup quarter-final win over Ireland Rangers through a slight calf strain, but is expected to be included in coach Andrew Bascome?s plans this weekend.
The prolific striker has yet to hit the target since having a three-year ban lifted last February while team-mate Caisey has been in and out of Cougars line-up this season.
Hornets? Darrell has enjoyed perhaps his most successful season so far in top-flight football, collecting a first Martonmere Cup winner?s medal last November.
Town defeated Cougars in a replay to clinch a second overall FA Cup two -years ago at the National Sports Centre, some 17 years after winning a first in 1986-87 under skipper Walter Musson.
According to Hornets officials, coach Devarr Boyles has decided not to bring back the likes of Wolde Place and Brendon Minors from studies abroad for Sunday?s all-important clash.
Veteran striker Carlos Smith, who netted a hat-trick against Cougars earlier this season at the Den, will again shoulder the bulk of his team?s FA Cup hopes this weekend.
Town ousted Cougars from the Martonmere Cup last October and then swept the league series with their cross-town rivals.
Cougars? sole victory over Hornets this campaign materialised during the Dudley Eve Champions Cup semi-final at Somerset Cricket Club where a Heys Wolfe volley sent the tournament?s eventual champions through to the final.
Town and Cougars also met each other in the 2004-05 inaugural Champions Cup final at White Hill Field, Hornets running out victorious on penalties.
Dandy Town Roots Commercial A team will lock horns with Dandy Town Roots Commercial C team at St.John?s Field this Saturday to determine bragging rights in ?a battle not to be missed?, according to club president Cal Blankendal. Kick off time is at 4.30 p.m.
An error in Wednesday's Commercial League column stated North Village were two goals behind PHC on goal difference. That sentence should have referred to Dandy Town Roots being behind on goal difference.
