Cougars battle through to final four
A fourth-minute strike from Domico Coddington finally settled this FA Cup quarter-final replay played before a large crowd at the Den last night.
In a match which failed miserably to live up to expectations, Coddington stabbed home a Heys Wolfe cross from inside the six yard box to send Cougars through to the final four for the third successive year in the prestigious competition.
Things appeared very promising for the home side in the early going as they immediately took the match to a Blazers' team missing several key players through either injury or suspension.
Wolfe fired in a long range shot which was partially saved by Blazers' custodian Shejuan (Shabba) Swan while the returning Raymond Beach uncharacteristically headed wide of the empty net. Cougars, encountering little or no difficulty exposing Boulevard's last line of defence, also forced four corners in the initial stages of the match.
Blazers, however, managed to withstand the onslaught to some degree, and as the half wore on grew in confidence venturing forward as Cougars appeared to take their foot off the throttle.
Relying heavily upon the counter-attack, Robert Wilson saw his header smothered by Cougars' goalie Ricardo Brangman before the home team's defence was called upon to hastily clear a high diagonal free kick in the middle.
Blazers had a scare when Swan injured his right groin attempting a save, a knock which required further attention at the half.
Swan, in obvious pain, battled on bravely ? and so did his team-mates who promptly resumed their all-out quest for the equaliser as frustration began to set in on the Cougars' attacking trio of Kwame Steede, Beach and Wolfe, whose mis-guided long range shots and fancy, but over-adventurous, flicks did not aid the cause.
First Brangman was forced to vacate his line to clear the ball away from a lurking Chae Simmons who then followed up by providing an appetising cross which rolled across the goal-mouth untouched.
Cougars sweeper Shawn Smith, who enjoyed yet another stellar performance in defence, positioned himself well to clear a Ricky Saltus goal-bound header off the line, as by now, a Boulevard equaliser appeared imminent.
Blazers captain Melchisedec Gibbons had a shot from close range parried away by Brangman while veteran midfielder Leonard Hypolite's diagonal cross dipped just over the bar.
But Cougars finally caught their second wind in the latter stages of the match and threatened on two more occasions to add to their tally. Wolfe had a header punched away to safety by Swan while Beach's woes continued in front of goal, this time in the form of an angled shot which came back off the upright with the 'keeper prone on the ground.
Blazers, who allowed their opponents to erase a two -goal deficit during the first quarter-final encounter at BAA Field, were then denied what would have been a deserved equaliser when Saltus ? unmarked at the back post ? headed over while Cougars and their vociferous following held their collective breath.
"We lacked composure in the attacking third of the pitch around the goal. We created enough chances to make the match easier but we always knew it was going to be a tough match ? more than anything it was always going to be mental playing against Boulevard," commented Cougars' player-coach Smith amid the near deafening chants of "ole".
