Cougars in top gear ahead of cup clash
If Devonshire Cougars turn up for tomorrow's FA Cup clash against perennial cup giants Somerset Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club with the same fighting spirit that swept them to a convincing victory over PHC Zebras recently, then the home team can certainly expect to find their work cut out for them.
Not only are Andrew Bascome's men ? currently under "house arrest" at Grotto Bay Hotel ? playing cohesively as a team, they are firing on all cylinders.
And even more sobering is the fact that ace striker Heys Wolfe has yet to shift out of first gear, Ricky Brangman jr has been starved of work between the posts and Wolfe's sidekick, Raymond (Packy) Beach, is nearing the end of suspension.
The Big Cats tore Mark Wade's Zebras to shreds just over a week ago at the Den, scoring four unanswered first-half goals and adding another after the break to send a clear message they do not intend to relinquish the league title just yet.
Domico Coddington, as usual, proved to be a thorn in Zebras' side while Aljame Zuill, team skipper Kwame Steede and the ever reliable Jeremy DeShields also played leading roles in a match PHC will quickly want to forget.
Cougars' ranks will be reinforced tomorrow with the return of pivotal defenders Omar Butterfield ? son of former Trojans' 'keeper Wayne Butterfield ? and Jamal Simmons. Both players sat out last week's clash with Zebras through suspension.
Team stalwart Shawn Smith is doubtful, though, having limped off injured in Cougars' previous match ? but not before converting from the penalty spot.
Trojans, on the flip side, are without inspirational sweeper Sean Simmons ? sent off during last week's win over Devonshire Colts ? injured Jabrel Tucker and Rodre (Piper) Wilson while key striker Stephen Astwood is serving an automatic one-game suspension after picking up a third yellow card last week.
Coach Dennis Brown will be forced to rely upon team depth to fill the gaps and make adjustments as Trojans ? FA Cup semi-finalists for the past three seasons ? bid for what would be an unprecedented tenth FA triumph overall.
Trojans thrashed Cougars 4-0 in the 1979 FA Cup Final at the former National Stadium and edged out the Big Cats during a five-goal league thriller under the lights at Cricket Lane last month.
Returning to Trojans team roster is lively striker Rohann Simons who always seems find a way to rise to the big-day occasion.
Remaining FA Cup fixtures tomorrow see 2004 champions Dandy Town host Boulevard at the Barn in the second match of a double-header. Cup holders North Village are favoured over Commercial outfit Vasco Mariners in the opening contest.
Elsewhere, struggling Devonshire Colts face a tricky tie with a bolstered Key West Rangers at White Hill Field, Southampton Rangers should douse Prospect/Fire at Southampton Oval, while perennial cup giants PHC are expected to be too strong for First Division leaders St.David's in the second match of a double-header at the Oval.
St.George's Colts are also favoured over Valley FC at Somerset Cricket Club while X Roads have a bye.
Gar Adams scored midway through the first half to earn Tuff Dogs victory over the visiting Jamaican Ambassadors at BAA Field on Tursday night.
The tourists were due to meet Somerset Extros last night and are scheduled to lock horns with an Over 40s local select today at the Den.
