Cougars look to claw way to top
Premier Division action heats up at both ends of the tables this weekend with Devonshire Cougars seeking to get back on course for a first-ever league championship and Somerset Eagles bidding to steer clear of the relegation zone.
With league leaders Dandy Town, Hamilton Parish, Southampton Rangers and North Village inactive this weekend due to the World Cup qualifier in Montserrat, attention switches to White Hill and BAA Fields.
At White Hill Field, Cougars will be looking to rebound from a recent 3-0 home defeat against Town that put a damper on their league title aspirations. Cougars, ousted from the Friendship Trophy competition in midweek by Eagles, take on lowly Devonshire Colts, another team looking to distance themselves off the bottom of the standings.
Both teams will be minus key players as Cougars? Domico Coddington and Colts? Shannon Burgess will suit up for Bermuda in the Caribbean on the same day while the former will also be without suspended captain Kwame Steede, sent off earlier this week against Eagles.
Cougars blanked Colts 3-0 last November during the teams? first league meeting.
Cougars can overhaul leaders Town and regain sole possession of first place with a win over Colts while the latter will be looking to pick up three crucial points. Colts presently have a two-point cushion over nearest rivals Eagles.
Meanwhile, Eagles? bid to avoid relegation could receive a much-needed boost should they prevail over Boulevard at BAA Field and Cougars get by Colts. The West Enders presently have eight points and a game in hand with Town, something Colts and Parish will be mindful of.
Eagles, however, might find themselves facing an uphill climb against a Blazers team still very much in the league championship hunt, though they will have to win their remaining fixtures tomorrow against Eagles and Cougars on March 28 and hope Town falter somewhere along the final stretch.
Boulevard blasted Eagles 4-0 last December at White Hill Field, but they will be without inspirational defender Stanton Lewis ? currently off the Island on Regiment duty ? tomorrow.
In First Division play, PHC Zebras will look to avenge a FA Cup quarter-final loss to Somerset, last week?s beaten FA Cup semi-finalists.
Zebras and Trojans will lock horns at Southampton Oval in the game of the day while third-placed Paget ? through to next month?s First Division Shield Final ? are away to St.George?s at Wellington Oval.
St.David?s host Wolves at Lord?s while Ireland Rangers will be playing for pride against Prospect at Malabar.
