Cougars pair on MVP shortlist

The Island?s most outstanding footballers during the 2004-05 season will be honoured tomorrow night at Bermuda Football Association?s (BFA) annual awards ceremony.

This year?s event will be held at the cricket pavilion on the National Sports Centre?s northern field, beginning at 7.30 p.m.

BFA general secretary David Sabir explained: ?We have narrowed down the top three vote getters in each of the categories. The winner will be disclosed at the ceremony and it is going to be a very exciting occasion. We have some very noteworthy performers this year and rightfully so they will be rewarded for their stalwart efforts.?

Among the shortlist of nominees for the coveted Most Valuable Player of the Year Award are Devonshire Cougars? pair Domico Coddington and Kwame Steede along with last year?s recipient, Carlos Smith.

Coddington, currently in Trinidad with Bermuda?s national team, is also one of three players vying for the Young Player of the Year Award.

This year?s Defensive Player of the Year Award will go to either Cougars stalwart Shawn Smith, PHC?s Tokia Russell or Boulevard?s Stanton Lewis, while Cougars coach Andrew Bascome is the clear favourite to walk away with the coveted Coach of the Year Award after guiding the Big Cats to Premier League and Friendship Trophy glory.

All candidates for each category were selected by club coaches. Calculations were then done, according to Sabir, by a local accounting firm with each ballot sealed until tomorrow night?s ceremony.

Other award categories include Referee of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, Women?s MVP, Premier and First Division leading goalscorers, women?s leading goalscorer and Fair Play awards for both men?s and women?s leagues.

For the first time since the ceremony?s inception, losing nominees will also be presented with a commemorative BFA medallion, revealed Sabir.

?We will also be presenting two women in football with special awards, and also have a special achievement award for a gentleman who has been very close to Bermuda over the years. And I think everyone will be pleased with these presentations,? he added.

The top two teams in the Premier and First Division will be presented prizemoney, courtesy of sponsors Cingular who ?have come onboard in a very significant way to support local football?, said Sabir.
