Cougars rejoice in the rain
Devonshire Cougars blew Group B of the Martonmere Cup wide open last night, reversing a loss to Somerset Trojans last week to beat Boulevard by the same score at rain-drenched Somerset.
In a match twice halted because of lightning, Cougars made the most of some poor finishing by their opponents ? who just three days earlier had mauled Premier League new boys Paget Lions 9-1 ? to run away comfortable winners.
Just which two of the three teams will go through to the semi-finals remains unclear, with Boulevard now needing to defeat Somerset to have any hope of advancing.
Entering the game with the knowledge that they had to win in order to survive, Cougars got off to a flying start with a superb Domico Coddington goal after just 14 minutes, the national squad player thundering home a Worrell Bean cross from the left.
But in a highly-charged affair under difficult conditions, Boulevard weren?t about to lie down and within 11 minutes they were back on level terms as Angelo Simmons converted from point blank range after Melchisedic Gibbons had done all the hard work on the right flank.
Gibbons then could have put his side in front but watched in agony as his effort hit the woodwork while at the other end Kwame Steede missed a sitter for Cougars.
Flashes of lightning forced players off the field shortly before half-time, threatening to end the match. But referee Lyndon Raynor resumed play when the skies cleared.
Shortly after half-time, it was Cougars who regained their lead when Raymond Beach beat keeper Higgs to a loose ball and fired home but again Boulevard quickly found an answer.
Just three minutes later, Shaki Crockwell rose to head in Dun-ya Taylor?s cross for the equaliser and after play was again halted in the 52nd minute because of lightning it was the Blazers who should have wrapped the game up.
However, Simmons missed two golden chances which were to come back to haunt his side.
In the 69th minute Coddington crossed for Beach to net his second and just two minutes later Steede sealed the victory as he back-heeled a Beach rebound into the empty net.
Cougars then almost grabbed a fifth when when Boulevard defender Stanton Lewis?s attempted clearance hit the upright.
